Like father, like daughter

Girls track looking to repeat

March 31, 2011
The torch has officially been passed. This year, the Badger track program is saying goodbye to longtime boys coach Dave Jaeger. But the Jaeger name isn't going anywhere. That's because Dave's daughter, Jenn, is taking over head coaching duties for the Badger girls track squad. With the departure of former head coach DeeDee Giovingo from last year's squad, the team needed a new leader. When interviewing for a teaching job in January, Jaeger was offered the position as head coach. A former Badger track standout and assistant coach, she was ready for her first head coaching position.

Chiefs will live and die by experience on diamond

March 31, 2011
Walworth — The Big Foot baseball squad will play the role of underdog this season. Although seven starters are back including all-conference center fielder Mike Kunes and top pitcher Luke Kahl, the Chiefs have been picked by the other division coaches to finish last in the six-team Rock Valley South this season. That's just fine with coach Steve Bochat, whose squad ended up in fifth place out of six in the division last year.

Sports Check: A semi-pro football tryout

January 20, 2011
Everything about Sunday morning was unorthodox. It started with me, a 28-year-old, mostly out of shape, former quarterback, waking up at the crack of dawn and driving 30 minutes to Williams Bay from Burlington. What I did at Williams Bay High School at 9 a.m. was for the love of journalism but could be construed by outsiders as straight-up crazy.

March 24, 2011
Former Badger cheer coach Leslie Abruzzo didnít need a whole lot of convincing to recommend her successor. After working with the junior varsity cheer squad for a couple weeks last year, Liz Lass made a good case to take over as head coach. Abruzzo believed Lass could take the girls to the next level. Lass, a former cheer coach in Antioch, Ill., lived up to her billing, leading the girls to a third-place finish Feb. 26 at the Division 2 state meet in Green Bay. The tradition continues, as Badger placed in the top three at state for the fourth straight year. The girls took second each of the last three years.
