Actual construction may not occur until 2018 or laterApril 28, 2011Delavan — Dozens of property owners who live or work along Highway 50 turned out at Delavan-Darien High School April 20 to look at and hear about the state Department of Transportation plans for major improvements and expansions to the roadway.
The project area is from Interstate 43 east, through town of Delavan and Williams Bay, to Highway 67.
The new Highway 50 arrangement, referred to as the recommended alternative by the DOT, calls for expanding the roadway to six lanes from I-43 to the entrance at Lowe's, and four lanes the rest of the way east.  |

Ashley Contreras, the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Delavan-Darien School District, said the council will partner with the Janesville Boys & Girls Club and the new advisory council will answer to the Janesville board of directors.
The next step will be to find a facility where the Delavan-Darien Boys and Girls Club can meet, possibly a vacant building or space in a school. |
Recent County Report Darien woman faces felony charge in theft of FFA Alumni Fund moneyApril 21, 2011Elkhorn — A Darien woman made a preliminary appearance in Walworth County Circuit Court Wednesday morning on a charge of felony theft of more than $10,000.Joy C. Becker, 41, 129 Sharon St., Darien, is accused of taking about $32,000 from the Delavan-Darien High School FFA Alumni Association Fund between April 1, 2009 and Oct. 31 2009. She faces fines of not more than $25,000 or imprisonment of not more than 10 years, or both. According to the complaint: Becker was treasurer of the FFA Alumni Fund.

Lake Lawn Resort sale details moving slowlyApril 21, 2011Delavan — The purchase of Lake Lawn Resort by a local group of investors led by Jim Drescher still is not a done deal, yet.But, Drescher said Tuesday morning, parties are working hard to iron out all the details that go along with the $9.5 million cash purchase of the 241-acre resort.“You close on a house in a month and we will just be at four weeks now,” Drescher said of the process to buy the resort. “There’s a lot of stuff to do and everyone is working hard.”

BREAKING - Lake Lawn sale to locals still in limboDrescher will make one final offer, bankers to meet at resort FridayMarch 24, 2011Delavan - Late Thursday evening, green gates blocked anyone trying to enter Lake Lawn Resort.But, on Friday afternoon, bankers from up to 14 different institutions that have a stake in the property were expected to meet on the grounds. Delavan Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis and prospective Lake Lawn buyer Jim Drescher told a room full of interested people Thursday night at City Hall about the scheduled gathering by the bankers. Nieuwenhuis said there are people from some of the banks involved that have never even seen what Lake Lawn looks like.

Selling heroin in jail earns stayed sentenceMarch 24, 2011Elkhorn — A woman who sold heroin inside the Walworth County jail received a 12-1/2 year stayed prison sentence during a March 12 court hearing. Erica L. Otto, 23, of Eagle, was sentenced to seven years of probation. If she violates the terms of her probation, she will have to serve the prison sentence and five years of extended supervision.

During the past two weeks, Jim Drescher, leader of the investment group, which apparently also includes Lake Geneva's Sal Dimiceli, has made offers to Anchor Bank for about $8.5 million. However, those offers were not accepted.

Whitewater to open county’s first charter grade schoolMarch 10, 2011Whitewater — Starting next school year, Lincoln School will convert to LINCS, a new charter school, and what may be the first elementary public charter school in Walworth County.LINCS stands for Lincoln Inquiry Charter School. The name was chosen to retain connection to the Lincoln Elementary School, said Jo Bernhardt, who is now principal of Lincoln and will be principal at LINCS.Bernhardt said plans for the new charter school started in November 2009, when the newly-hired superintendent, Suzanne Zentner, announced she wanted the district to focus on 21st century learning.
