May 05, 2011Williams Bay — The Williams Bay softball squad is over the .500 mark thanks to a 3-1 mark last week.
On Monday at home, the Bulldogs trailed 2-0 after the first inning but came back with two runs in the third and three in the fourth en route to a 5-3 victory. The girls improved to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the Trailways South Conference.
Sophomore Sam Storms went the distance on the mound, striking out 12 while allowing one earned run, two hits and a walk. At the plate, Alyssa Alheid and Claudia Wautlet each had two hits for the Bay. Also, Molly Perkins had a hit and two RBIs. |
May 05, 2011Pewaukee — Saturday's Lake Country Charity Invite had its share of the state's big dogs in high school golf.
According to Badger coach Dave DeShambo, it is one of the best tournaments of the year and featured five of the best teams in the state, including Kettle Moraine and Milwaukee Marquette.
Unfortunately for the Badgers, it wasn't their best round of golf. |

In the case of the Faith Christian boys basketball squad, the Eagles are peaking at the right time.
With two convincing victories last week, the Eagles are winners of four straight games and are now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the Indian Trails Conference. Coach Brian Pollard is pleased with his team's recent hot streak. |
| | | | | | (click for larger version) | January 20, 2011Everything about Sunday morning was unorthodox.
It started with me, a 28-year-old, mostly out of shape, former quarterback, waking up at the crack of dawn and driving 30 minutes to Williams Bay from Burlington.
What I did at Williams Bay High School at 9 a.m. was for the love of journalism but could be construed by outsiders as straight-up crazy. |
Recent Sports Chiefs down BayApril 28, 2011Williams Bay — On Monday night, the Williams Bay softball squad may have struck first against neighboring Big Foot. But it was the Chiefs who had the last laugh. Big Foot benefited from big innings in the third and seventh en route to an 8-5 victory over the host Bulldogs.

Badger takes two on linksTeam flying high at 3-0 in Southern LakesApril 28, 2011Lyons Township — Coming into Monday night’s double dual at Hawk’s View, the Badger golf squad hadn’t competed in about two weeks due to weather cancellations. After all was said and done, however, the Badgers didn’t show any signs of rust. Badger picked up two Southern Lakes victories, 155-174 over Elkhorn and 155-191 over Wilmot, in a par 36 meet dampened by chilly conditions and a late rainfall.

Badgers blanket Big Foot in Rock/Lakes challengeApril 21, 2011Walworth — After starting the season with two losses, the Badger girls soccer squad is righting its ship. Saturday at Big Foot at the Rock Valley/Southern Lakes challenge, despite some bizarre weather conditions, the Badgers picked up shutout victories over Big Foot and East Troy. Badger (4-2 overall) has now won four straight games, including shutouts in its last three. Ross Fowler is proud of his team.“The girls are really buying into our style,” he said. “They are possessing the ball and finishing opportunities. And freshman goalie Autumn Mikrut, for never playing goalie before, has been outstanding. She is playing with a lot of confidence.”

Uniting for a good causeApril 21, 2011Williams Bay — Back in January, when the American Cancer Society contacted Williams Bay softball coach Jeff Kuespert about hosting a Coaches vs. Cancer game, his answer was a no-brainer — yes. This particular cause hit home for Kuespert, whose father-in-law died from cancer in December. So Kuespert reached out to Big Foot softball coach Craig Utesch, who also jumped on board. This year’s Big Foot-Bay tilt will mean something more than the annual rivalry. On Monday, April 25, the Bay will host Big Foot in a Coaches vs. Cancer game at 4:30 p.m. at Williams Bay High School.

Chief golfers ready to reignApril 14, 2011Walworth — Last year was a good one for the Big Foot boys golf squad. The guys took second in the Rock Valley South Conference and advanced to sectionals. While last year was good, this spring is shaping up to be great for Big Foot.

Badger netters fully loadedApril 14, 2011At last year’s Southern Lakes boys tennis meet, Badger missed out on the conference title by one measly point to Waterford. Coach Marty Badt and his players haven’t forgotten about that day. With plenty of experience back, including three state qualifiers, Badt’s bunch is ready for big things this season. “The conference meet left a bitter taste in our mouths last year,” said Badt, now in his seventh season. “We have a chip on our shoulder this year to make sure it doesn’t come down to one point. This is one of the deeper, stronger teams I’ve had in a long time.”

BREAKING: Spangler, Wieseman land first-team honors on all-county squadApril 07, 2011The 2011 All-Walworth County basketball teams were announced today, and several area stars shone brightly. None lit up the court more than two offensive juggernauts, Big Foot senior Courtney Spangler and Badger junior Lana Wieseman. Both were named to the girls first team.

New coach Isham ready to winApril 07, 2011Walworth — Annie Isham isn’t your typical first-year coach. It’s like she was born to do this job. Isham has coached the Geneva Lake United Soccer Club for 15 years, including U12 and U14 girls for the last five. So in December, it was only natural when she became the Big Foot/Williams Bay girls soccer coach, a spot vacated by Marcus Nolan.

Badger boys must replace big namesApril 07, 2011The Badger baseball squad could go through some growing pains this season. While seven seniors are back, the boys will miss some of their big guns from last year. After a 14-11 record and a trip to the regional finals last summer, the Badgers graduated three players who are currently playing college baseball — catcher Colter Beck (Division 3 Cardinal Stritch), shortstop Clint Andresen (Cardinal Stritch) and outfielder Laramie Wieseman (D3 Beloit College). Andresen was a first team all-Southern Lakes Conference pick and led the squad with a .359 batting average. Badger also will miss Jake Hodgeman, an honorable mention all-conference selection who led the team with six home runs and 25 RBIs.

Chiefs will live and die by experience on diamondMarch 31, 2011Walworth — The Big Foot baseball squad will play the role of underdog this season.Although seven starters are back including all-conference center fielder Mike Kunes and top pitcher Luke Kahl, the Chiefs have been picked by the other division coaches to finish last in the six-team Rock Valley South this season. That’s just fine with coach Steve Bochat, whose squad ended up in fifth place out of six in the division last year.
