Fontana searching for donationsMay 12, 2011Fontana — After the Reid Park gazebo was torn down last year, village officials promised it would rebuild the structure.
During budget hearings earlier this year, even as other expenditures were being scrapped, the $35,000 to rebuild the gazebo remained in the plans.
However, to curb some costs, the village is looking for ways to bypass the public bidding requirements. |

January 20, 2011Fontana — For many years the building on the corner of Fontana Boulevard and Highway 67 was a place where people had their hair cut and styled.
In September 2007, Headquarters, 138 Fontana Blvd., closed its doors. About a year later, the village purchased the building and the adjacent vacant lot for $350,000 with plans to redevelop it in the future.
Now the village is working with Brian Pollard, the president of Fairwyn Development Corporation, to develop the site and return it to the tax roll. |

Village may abandon Parks CommitteeApril 28, 2011Walworth — The village is playing with an idea that would eliminate the Parks Committee.A proposal discussed at the April board meeting would send the responsibilities of maintaining and improving the parks to the Public Work’s Committee. A parks subcommittee would make recommendations to the Public Works committee. Trustee Eddie Snyder, who chairs the Parks Committee, said the Public Works Department is already in charge of maintaining the baseball fields and parks, which is why it would absorb the responsibility.
Board has choice to makeSchool District can fund educational program or capital improvementsApril 28, 2011Fontana — After crunching numbers, the village’s Elementary School found it was going to have extra money in its budget for this school year.Now, the School Board members have a choice — they can make capital improvements in the building or add a new educational program called Compass. After Monday’s meeting, School Board President Jennifer Keefe said the district needs to maintain the facility, but she was leaning toward spending the funds on programing.
Teacher, support staff cuts save Bay district about $400,000April 21, 2011Williams Bay — Cutting four teachers and reducing the hours on another three saved the district $259,252, said District Superintendent Fred Vorlop.At the April 11 School Board meeting, the board approved laying off four elementary school teachers and cutting the hours of two high school teachers and one junior high school teacher. Those layoffs will be final as of June 30.In addition, two support personnel at the high school will be laid off and one retiring teacher will not be replaced. That will save another $141,500, said Vorlop. That makes a grand total of $400,752 in personnel cuts.
Village needs time to decide fate of HighwayBoard considers TIF district, grants, referendum to proceed with projectApril 21, 2011Walworth — Another discussion on the Highway 14 project brought a packed house to a joint meeting between the Village Board and Plan Commission Monday night.Basically, two options are on the table. One would widen the turns around the village square. That plan would require the state to purchase and raze the Antique Mall and King Dragon. The second option, which was developed by the village’s Plan Commission, would require the state to purchase the Antique Mall and a neighboring home. Highway 14 would run completely north and south, eliminating all right-angle turns, but would bring the road closer to Walworth Elementary School.

Sherin, 56, of Lake Geneva, were transported to Lakeland Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries.

There also will be silent auctions and raffles for the gift baskets that have been collected. Bingo and a 50-50 raffles will also be featured at the event.
Bay cuts 4 teaching jobsBoard also reduces 3 positions, cuts field trips, teacher requisitionsApril 14, 2011Williams Bay — If nothing changes and events continue as projected, four Williams Bay teachers will not be back next school year.Another three will be working reduced hours.Under provisions of the teachers contract, the Williams Bay School Board on Monday voted unanimously to send preliminary layoff notifications to four teachers: Hanna Coddington, first grade; Nancy McCabe, kindergarten; Dawn Raufman, third grade; and Jessica Reinstad, second grade.
