We need know the facts to solve America's problems

June 09, 2011
All politicians embellish and exaggerate to make their ideas and opinions sound and look better than those who oppose them. Many politicians go a step further and flat out lie. But, the problem is facts should be facts and there should be no question about those. However, it seems as though in the political arena we now find ourselves, the blur has become greater between facts, ideas and commentary. And none of this does any good to solve the problems we must address in America.

Some of us have been waiting a lifetime for this

January 20, 2011
Although I enjoy almost all sports, I don't typically use this column to talk about those things. An editorial should be about important national topics such as our more than $14 trillion national debt, increasing health care costs and the use of politics by some to make excuses or try to explain why an insane man shot people at an Arizona grocery store. An editorial typically should be an opinion about a local issue such as the rescue and fire services disagreement between Geneva Township and the Lake Geneva Fire Department or whether the Walworth County District Attorney's Office should have filed charges against Lake Geneva city staff for mismanagement.

Memorial Day just not the same
May 26, 2011
As Memorial Day approaches, there’s something missing — I can feel it. Something is just not right.Maybe it’s less something than someone.During my years as editor of the Regional News, to me, more than anyone, Ray Mellien signified Memorial Day. It’s probably my memories of him in his uniform marching or him being one of the special detail for the 21-gun salute so many times at ceremonies and events in the area. It also is because every year, about three weeks prior to Memorial Day, he would stop in at the newspaper office, give me a great smile and hand me the mock up of the American Legion Memorial Day program, often with his handwritten notes on the schedule for the day’s ceremony.
City skate park project decision all about money
May 19, 2011
I find myself in an awkward position on this issue.Being in favor of limited government at all levels doesn’t match up with what I’m about to say.The city of Lake Geneva should spend up to $300,000 of already collected Tax Incremental Financing District money to design, build and maintain a new skate/BMX park at Dunn Field behind Eastview Elementary School.
How about a civilized, thoughtful economy debate
May 12, 2011
The pendulum may be swinging back.A few weeks ago I wrote a column saying Wisconsin’s own Paul Ryan, the poster boy for the GOP budget proposals, may be in line to be president some day. I stand by that prediction. However, over the last few weeks the Democrats have taken the offensive. Obama, having sat on his hands and let the Republicans take the initiative on budget proposals, has apparently listened to his advisers and finally jumped into the fray.

Howard Brown died in his sleep last week.Mr. Brown, as most people called him out of respect, was president of United Communications Corporation, the parent company of the Kenosha News and the Lake Geneva Regional News. The name may not be familiar to many of our readers. He lived in Kenosha and his main connection to the Lake Geneva area is that the corporation he headed owns our paper. But he is known throughout the Midwest as the paternal spirit of one of the few family-owned newspapers remaining.
After nearly 10 years, mission truly accomplished

In New York and Washington D.C. late Sunday night, Americans took to the streets waving flags, jumping up and down and cheering. But, they weren’t celebrating one of their sports teams victories or an Election Day win. Their jubilation occurred minutes after an announcement part of the world, especially America, had waited for since September 2001.Terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden was dead.

Sometimes change is good

It seems like every year or two I write a column like this. I talk about where we’ve been as a newspaper and where we’re going. Over the years, the Regional News has done a pretty good job keeping up with the times. We have had a website for longer than many other newspapers of our size — since about 2001. About three years ago now, we performed a full redesign of our website. During the past year or so, we have tried to stay up on the social media and have even dabbled with video and posting the materials on YouTube.
Sometimes you have to do what you don’t want to do
April 21, 2011
Within the next month or so, the Lake Geneva City Council will have to decide whether to borrow up to about $3 million to pay for a list of things including road work and purchases of public works vehicles and a new aerial fire truck. In these tough economic times with a focus on state and federal deficits and debts, the financial landscape is changing. People are more focused on government spending, taxes and services at all levels than they have been in a long time. When it comes to those three — spending, taxes and services — there are always options and choices for a governmental body.
