Family has new lease on life

June 23, 2011
Dear W.C., I am struggling to pay my rent and utilities. My husband died last year. It has been hard for us ever since. He was only 48 years old and had a heart attack. We really need help moving out of the house we are renting and into a more affordable apartment. I am working full-time but cannot keep up with the expenses. Can you please help us?

A deserving family in need

January 20, 2011
Dear W.C., I know a family that is having a very hard time. I know they are late on their rent. They have two young children. The father lost his job last summer. The mother was hit by a hit-and-run driver and was left handicapped. They do not receive enough assistance from disability and unemployment. Due to all the medical bills and threats from the bill collectors they have been left broke. I have known this family for many years and know they are good people. They have always lived frugally and have a devout belief in God. They do not have gas for their car. I have offered to drive them on several occasions but they have declined. I think they are too embarrassed to accept any help. They have even declined my requests to visit due to their embarrassment of not being able to afford heat. I do not know how they are feeding everyone and keeping a roof over their heads. Please help this deserving family.

Coworker in need of desperate help
June 16, 2011
Dear W.C.,I am writing to ask for help for a coworker. She is a hard working woman in her late 50s. She waitresses five days a week and I know it is hard on her. She has had two operations and I see her in pain at times, yet she never complains. I have noticed her coming to work early to do her personal grooming. She tries to sneak in unnoticed and seems very embarrassed about it. Her only child died fifteen years ago in a car accident and she cares for her elderly mother. I know she is a truly good person and is really struggling to make ends meet. Her car is falling apart and there have been times I offered her a ride home due to it not starting. I do not know how she gets around when I am not there. Please help.

Eight years of caring, sharing
June 09, 2011
This column marks our eighth year of sharing our work with you, our readers, through a weekly newspaper column. We have covered many aspects of poverty, disability, illness, child abuse and neglect, spousal abuse, addiction, job loss, tragedy, etc. We have together cried with despair over the many problems that affect our society and economy. We have held the hands of senior citizens that no longer feel needed or treasured. We have offered assistance to many struggling parents and grandparents trying to raise children in a safe and healthy environment. We have shared with our handicapped neighbors the most basic needs to make their lives somewhat easier and accessible. There are many more fellow creations than you read about each week that The Time Is Now To Help has assisted. For each letter you read in the newspaper, there are approximately 10 more families, children, single parents, senior citizens, or disabled, we have helped due to your generous contributions to our cause. We are blessed to have caring and sharing individuals that offer a helping hand to our fellow Americans in desperate need. Thank you for your continued support of our mission to remove the pain and suffering of our fellow creations.

Lending a helping hand
June 02, 2011
Dear W.C.,Iím writing you in behalf of an elderly woman who goes to our church. A neighbor of hers told us she needed help but could not help her. When I saw the elderly widow at church I asked her if she would mind talking to me. Church was about to start so I told her I would meet her afterwards. When we met I asked her if she needed any help. She looked at me puzzled and said no. I told her I was just trying to help. She just looked embarrassed, shook her head no, and walked away. When I caught up to her I noticed she was crying. She would not stop walking away and kept saying, ďNo I am fine.Ē Could you please check on her?Concerned Pastor

$40,000 matching grant helping
May 26, 2011
Several months ago I started receiving many new requests for assistance due to the same circumstances, the closure of Lake Lawn Resort. After 133 years, Lake Lawn Resort had closed and several hundred fellow creations lost their jobs. Due to the fact many of these jobs were low-paying, and the balance moderate paying, these families and individuals were surviving from paycheck to paycheck. Our fellow Americans found themselves cutting back on food, lowering their thermostat and struggling with their rent. Many could not make car payments, pay for medical care and prescriptions, or buy everyday necessities for their children. With our beloved country in a recession, many of our government assistance programs have extensive waiting lists. Due to the intense fear of becoming homeless, our desperate neighbors reached out to us through The Time Is Now To Help. I prayed over the numerous requests for help from the recession, and the closing of Lake Lawn. In my heart I knew Lake Lawn had to reopen. This was a monumental task, especially in a recession, so as I always do I turned to God.After praying for some time in the midst of a dark, snowy January evening, in walked Jim Drescher. I hadnít seen Jim for several weeks. Jim and his wife Ardith and numerous God loving volunteers had been busy with their WC Family Resource Center, feeding over 1,300 people a month. Surprised to see Jim walking in out of the snow I jumped up and hugged him. I told Jim about how the closure of Lake Lawn Resort, along with the ongoing recession, was adding to the desperate pains of poverty. Jim said, ďWe are going to have to reopen Lake Lawn.Ē Thinking of all our fellow creations that desperately needed help, I started to tear up. Knowing God was listening to this tall request from Jim, I knew at that moment God sent Jim to accomplish such a grand task.

Hope restored for young adult
May 19, 2011
Dear W.C.,I am feeling hopeless at 19 years old. I have been unable to find a job and support myself. I was in foster care for the last six years of my life. My father went to prison when I was 10 years old. My mother didnít bother to care for my sister and I after that. She drank heavily and neglected us. Soon her boyfriend was abusing us but she didnít seem to notice or care. I told my teacher at school how bad things were and we were taken away. The first foster home we went to was not much better than home. I was moved again and ended up with a decent family until I turned 18. I do not know where my younger sister is. As soon as I turned 18 I was released from the foster care system and on my own. I do not feel prepared at all to be an adult. I have no family or friends to turn to. My foster family is having financial and health problems and can no longer help me. I have nowhere else to turn. Please give me hope for a better future.

Desperately in need of a car
May 12, 2011
Dear W.C.,I have been struggling with my broken down car. I do not want to lose my job because I cannot get to work. It took me over six months to find the job I have now. I have not caught up with my bills yet since I was unemployed. I was not able to have work done on my car and now it is has broken down. I cannot afford to call a cab every day. I do not know any other employees well enough to ask for a ride. My children rely on me to take care of them and how can I do that without a reliable car? Please help so I can keep my job, pay off my bills and care for my children.

We may not be hurting, others are
May 05, 2011
Dear W.C.,I have had to move into my sisterís basement. I was unable to pay my rent or utilities. I was evicted and would be homeless with my son and daughter, if not for my sisterís help. She is a single mother working two jobs just to make ends meet. I am embarrassed and ashamed to be asking for charity. I have raised both my children and was always able to pay my bills. Due to the recession, the company I worked for closed, after being employed there for over 15 years. I lost my job and my dignity. Please help.

Summertime Foundation $5,000 matching grant = $10,000 poverty assistance
April 28, 2011
Thank you to everyone that contributed to The Summertime Foundation $5,000 Matching Grant. This matching grant enabled us to provide $10,000 in assistance to many struggling poverty stricken fellow Americans. These funds kept eight families from becoming homeless. The donations allowed six families to keep their lights and heat on. We helped a family get their car in running order to enable the father to keep his much needed job. We provided five families with gas cards for their cars. With gas prices so high, it is a daily struggle to keep gas in the car. We provided many families with food. The high cost of gas and utilities has cut into many families food budgets. The following is a breakdown of how your donations were put to work to help our fellow creations. Thank you again for Caring & Sharing. Together we have eased the pains of poverty for our fellow creations. God Bless you for helping.

Finding love, respect in tough times
April 21, 2011
Dear W.C., My utility bill has been too high for me to keep up with most of the winter. I have made a few small payments towards the bill but could not catch up. Now I will be disconnected in a few weeks. The utility company was unable to disconnect my gas and electric during the winter months. Now that spring is here they can begin disconnections again. How will I keep my children warm? I have tried to get back on a budget plan but since I was on one once before and was late with one payment they will not allow it. If my utilities are disconnected I will lose my lease and be evicted also. I have a work-related injury that has plagued me for the last two years. I have exhausted all workmenís comp and unemployment. I have been trying to receive disability. My doctor still does not want me to go back to my job in nursing due to the spine and nerve damage I have but what are my options? If I go back my doctor says I risk permanent damage. I feel like it is permanent damage now because even after several operations and physical therapy I am still in constant pain. I have a part-time job that pays minimum wage just to try and keep up with rent and food. It does not go far. I donít know where else to turn.

Too much pride to ask for help
April 14, 2011
Dear W.C., I have a friend that is having a very hard time feeding her children and keeping up with her rent. She does not know I am writing to you on her behalf. She is a good hardworking mom and has too much pride to write to The Time Is Now for help. I know because I have suggested it several times and her reply is always that she could never do that. She always says that she is not that bad off but I see how little she eats, I know she is behind on her rent, and I know her children need clothes and shoes. Her youngest child was born with some health problems that have put a real financial strain on the family. It also put a strain on her marriage and her husband walked out on her and the children several months ago.
