Group seeks to grow Delavan Lake network

Delavan Township — Delavan Lake is relatively small with a surface of 2,070 acres and a maximum depth of about 60 feet. It gets a large portion of its water from the surrounding 26,000 acre watershed. And that's a problem, said Maggie Zoellner, Delavan Lake WIN program manager.

Delavan — The advisory council of a new Delavan-Darien Boys & Girls Club met and organized last week Ashley Contreras, the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Delavan-Darien School District, said the council will partner with the Janesville Boys & Girls Club and the new advisory council will answer to the Janesville board of directors. The next step will be to find a facility where the Delavan-Darien Boys and Girls Club can meet, possibly a vacant building or space in a school.

Delavan — A late start to Lake Lawn Resort’s summer season apparently hasn’t slowed the flow of guests who are just happy to see the venerable vacation lodge has reopened.The resort opened its guest rooms Friday. Also reopened on Friday were the fitness center, the gift shop and the Frontier RestaurantThe golf course, the Lookout Bar and Eatery, pools and marina were opened earlier.
Man allegedly stalks 13-year-old girl

Elkhorn — Undercover police officers allegedly witnessed a 37-year-old Whitewater man, who was free on bond in a child sexual assault case, follow a 13-year-old girl as she walked home from summer school in the city of Whitewater.In Walworth County, Armando Cervantes Orduna, 755 N. Tratt St., Apt. 179, faces two felony stalking counts and two counts of bail jumping.If convicted of all four counts, he faces up to 19 years imprisonment and $40,000 in fines.
Rauland encourages public to give blood

Elkhorn — Bob Rauland plans to be in the cafeteria at the Elkhorn Area Middle School , 627 E. Court St., sometime between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 6, one sleeve conspicuously rolled up.Twice a year for a little over 50 years, Rauland has hiked up a sleeve to give a unit of blood, usually for BloodCenter of Wisconsin, which keeps blood in the communities where it’s collected.Most beneficiaries of Rauland’s vascular largesse have been strangers. In this case, the blood collection is in honor of Rod Paulsen, a former Elkhorn middle school teacher who is battling cancer.
EcoFair organizers hope green catches on

And he has feathers.The real talent here is Sarah Hoeft, also of Lake Geneva, who over the past eight years, taught Echo, a Double Yellow-headed Amazon parrot, everything he’s needed to know to impress the judges of NBC-TV’s “America’s Got Talent.”

Elkhorn — About 50 people turned up at the American Legion’s weekly Support Our Troops ceremony on Monday, at the Walworth County Government Center, 100 W. Walworth St., Elkhorn.Bob Webster Sr., who founded and leads the weekly ceremonies, said he was more than pleased with the turnout, considering it was a holiday. Among those in the audience was Army Pfc. Cody Robinson of Elkhorn. A member of the 101st Airborne Division, Robinson returned from duty in Afghanistan in June. His next posting will be at Ft. Campbell, Ky.“When I was over there, this organization sent us ‘care’ packages and made life a little easier over there,” Robinson said.
County to borrow $7.74 million for roads

Elkhorn — Walworth County got a great rate on its recent promissory note and a pat on the back by Moody’s Investor Service.The Walworth County Board unanimously approved borrowing $7.74 million for road repairs at its June 20 meeting. The money will go to resurfacing and doing some base work on about 26 miles of road in the northern part of the county around Lake Beulah and East Troy.Work on that project has already begun using money borrowed earlier for road maintenance, said David Bretl, county administrator. But the $7.74 million borrowed by the county represents the anticipated cost of the repairs, he said.
Traffic warning: Expect congestion on I-43 Saturday

Elkhorn-- Drivers using Interstate 43 and Walworth County Highway D are warned of serious traffic congestion this weekend, according to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office. Road construction underway on I- 43 between Elkhorn and the Waukesha County line in both directions, and replacement of the Highway D bridge means traffic is already slow in those areas. A June 25 Jimmy Buffett concert at Alpine Valley in the town of Lafayette, which will draw an estimated 30,000 fans, could bring slow traffic to a crawl, the Sheriff’s Office warns.
County OWI court may be ready in four months

Elkhorn — Protecting society from people who act badly may involve more than just locking those people up.Initiation of a Walworth County court for third to fifth-time Operating While Intoxicated offenders may be no more than four months off, according to Circuit Court Judge David Reddy. Reddy chaired the June 11 meeting of the Walworth County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.“We still have to work out the details,” Reddy said. However, the OWI program would involve the Sheriff’s Office, judges, the probation and parole program and the District Attorney’s Office in a coordinated effort to identify and enroll people who would benefit from the program.
Lakeland Animal Shelter plans for expansion

Delavan Township— Lakeland Animal Shelter took another step toward expansion.Last month, the Walworth County Board reviewed and approved the report of the County Zoning Agency for rezoning about 3.14 acres of land currently owned by the Hold Your Horses boarding ranch to make way for expansion of the Lakeland Animal Shelter.The rezone covers only part of the 10 acres the shelter is planning to buy. Purchase of 10 acres from Hold Your Horses is pending, said Kristen Perry, director of Lakeland Animal Shelter.
