April 09, 2013 | 03:33 PMThis past week The Time Is Now to Help has had an overwhelming request for assistance.
Actually we always seem to have an overwhelming amount of requests for assistance, but this is the first time in many months we were not able to answer the requests due to lack of finances.
For the last few years we have been able to maintain a consistent flow of donations to cover as many requests as Time Is Now volunteers had the time to get to in a week. Last year, thanks to the CNN Heroes event, CBS News special coverage, Fox News and all your support, we were able to provide assistance to more than 1,000 people.
Each of these people were helped in many different ways; rent or shelter assistance, food, toiletries, car repairs, cars, household necessities, utility payments or utilities restored.
They each received enough assistance to give them a fresh start in their finances, a complete budget review and adjustments to ensure they could be independent once more. We found our fellow creations struggling to survive. Together we removed their pains of poverty and lifted their lives with hope and love.
This week was very hard, as we could not help, because we just did not have the funds. At this time we have five families living in motels waiting for our help with first month's rent and security deposit. They have secured jobs.
Once you become homeless it is nearly impossible to ever come up with this large sum of money, all at once, while you are still paying for a motel room, food and other expenses like gas, etc. Some of these families suffered overwhelming health expenses, job loss, fires — the working poor living week to week. They are not lazy people, unmotivated to provide for themselves and their families. They are heartbroken fellow Americans that have hit a rough patch in life. They are looking to us for a hand up, not a hand out.
We also have a waiting list for donated cars. There are many people driving either unsafe cars, struggling to find a ride each day to work or unable to find jobs due to lack of transportation. We never have enough cars for the amount of requests we receive for this assistance. We also provide repairs for approximately five cars each month. It is a great relief to have reliable transportation so people can maintain employment. It is a dire necessity to survive.
At this time I have more than 180 letters on my desk waiting for an answer from The Time Is Now to Help. They are all desperate and yet hopeful that we will be able to provide the help they need. If they are approved for assistance, do not have a criminal history, are not drug addicts, child abusers, alcoholics, and are honest with their needs, we would love to offer them the caring and sharing support they need.
I love my work with people, having to offer advice on budgets, praying with them and offering true compassion, removing their suffering. I love to see their lives turned around, tears turning to smiles, helping to find jobs and affordable housing, filling refrigerators and cabinets with food, providing safe transportation, much needed toiletries and household necessities.
This love for my fellow creations is what keeps me going back every day, and thanks to you, I get renewed energy knowing I'm not alone.
This week we saw some amazing people come forward to help. I spoke with The Summertime Foundation, thanking them again for their recent matching grant.
When they asked how things were going at The Time Is Now to Help, I broke down and told them the truth. I told them about the many people counting on us at this time, and how we were praying for help. Without hesitation The Summertime Foundation offered another $10,000 Matching Grant opportunity, to begin immediately.
Praise God for the wonderful people in our midst that see the great need and want to help. Thank you, thank you to The Summertime Foundation for again offering a $10,000 Matching Grant. Please join us in helping our fellow Americans who are in desperate need. Please help. Every dollar you donate will be matched by another, doubling the help you will be providing. Together we will remove the fear and heart break of poverty.
On the same day I called my good friend Gregg Kunes to talk about the overwhelming need for assistance. Gregg immediately said, "Sal, come on over to pick up a check." I was moved to tears as I thanked my good friend for his caring and sharing heart. Thank you, thank you Kunes Country Auto Group. You are a good friend and a blessing to The Time Is Now to Help, truly making a difference by helping those in desperate need.
With hopes of future funds provided with the inspiration of The Summertime Foundation Matching Grant we hope to help many of the people that are waiting for our assistance. With "your" help we will not have to tell these people, "I'm sorry we cannot help you at this time."
Where will they go when they cannot afford shelter any longer? What will they do when their utilities are disconnected on April 15? How will they keep their jobs if they cannot afford to have their car repaired? These questions are always weighing heavily on all of us. Once you have seen how many of these people are living, knowing the suffering poverty is causing, you are compelled to help again and again.
Our help is desperately needed for those suffering in the pains of poverty. I thank all of "you" for Caring and Sharing. Together we will continue our good works of compassion for our fellow creations. While some say the economy is improving there is still a long recovery for our fellow Americans. Together we will continue to remove the pains and suffering of poverty for the many turning to us for help.
God Bless Everyone,
