Walworth County District Attorney Phillip Koss released the below press release earlier today announcing his candidacy for Walworth County Circuity Court Judge Branch 1, which is currently being held by Judge Robert Kennedy. In the press release, Koss writes that his candidacy is supported by Kennedy.

"I, Phillip A. Koss, along with the support of my wife Mary, my family, Sheriff David Graves, virtually all of Chiefs of Police in Walworth County, the Hon. Robert J. Kennedy Branch I, the Hon. James L. Carlson Branch II, and the Hon. John R. Race, Branch III, and the support of many victims; do hereby declare my candidacy for Walworth County Circuit Court Judge, Branch I.

For more than twenty five years, I have served this community as a prosecutor. In 1990, you, the voters of Walworth County, granted me the privilege of serving as District Attorney. That is the office that I have held for the last 21 years. Over that time, I have prosecuted everything from minor ordinance violations to sexual assaults, from speeding tickets, to first-degree intentional homicides, from drunken driving cases to child abuse cases. None of these prosecutions have been taken lightly; I have done my best to serve the voters and the law, but most importantly justice. It is to continue that service that I declare my intention to run for judge.

In May of 2007, the Wisconsin Victim/Witness Professional Association presented me with the Victim Advocacy Award for outstanding victim advocacy. In June of 2007, I received the E. Michael McCann Prosecutor of the Year award from the Wisconsin District Attorney's Association. I am the current chairperson of the Walworth County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee, and am President of the Walworth County Alliance for Children. I also sit on the Child Advocacy Board of Directors for the State of Wisconsin. I have taught at the University of Wisconsin for over ten years. I am also active in the community, and have coached youth basketball and baseball for 12 years. I am the head of the church council at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Elkhorn.

It is with mixed emotions that I declare my candidacy. I have always wanted to be a prosecutor, and I have fulfilled that role to the best of my ability. If elected, I will truly miss serving as your District Attorney. However, other challenges await, and I have many ideas to build upon the strong foundation established by the current judges.

I look forward to reintroducing myself to you not only as Walworth County District Attorney but also as candidate for Walworth County Circuit Court Judge Branch I."
