October 03, 2012 | 02:03 PMTown of Walworth — An alleged drunken driver is accused of hurting two people when he failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Highway 14 and Six Corners Road on Monday night.
Bernard B. Benjamin, 70, Des Plaines, Ill., was arrested after the Oct. 1 crash and charges have been referred to the Walworth County's District Attorney's Office for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and failing to yield the right of way from a stop sign.
He was booked and released from the Walworth County Jail.
At 8:38 p.m. the Walworth County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a two-car crash.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Benjamin was driving a 2004 Lincoln Navigator and was traveling north on Six Corners Road. He then allegedly failed to yield the right of way after stopping at the stop sign, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Department.
After entering Highway 14, Benjamin struck a 1998 Dodge Dakota Truck, which was traveling west. It was operated by Cristy L. Nuvy, 47, of Janesville, and she was transported to an area hospital for her injuries, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Department.
Benjamin's wife, Joann Benjamin, 65, of Des Plaines, Ill, was a passenger in the Navigator. She was also injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
