McKinley pleads guilty to sexual assault

March 06, 2013 | 03:29 PM
ELKHORN — A former Williams Bay JV basketball coach, who had a sexual relationship with a student-athlete, pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon to a felony charge of repeated sexual assault of a child.

When Shane S. McKinley, 28, now of Georgetown, Texas, is sentenced May 9, he faces up to 40 years imprisonment and $100,000 in fines. His sentence can include up to 25 years of initial confinement and 15 years of extended supervision.

The accusation that McKinley was having a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old girl first came to light in December 2011. Another student became aware of the relationship and informed her father, who immediately spoke to the victim's father.

The victim's parents met with school officials, and McKinley was terminated from the school. Shortly after the termination, the city of Delavan Police Department raided McKinley's apartment and collected electronic devices including his cell phone.

On his cell phone, police located text messages between McKinley and the victim.

By pleading guilty, McKinley will avoid new files being charged against him, which were referred by the city of Delavan.

At a previous court hearing, Deputy District Attorney Joshua Grube said the city of Delavan Police Department recommended 18 counts of possession of child pornography and three new counts of sexual assault of a child.

As part of a plea agreement, the state will dismiss five charges of possession of child pornography. However, those charges will be read into the record during his sentencing hearing.

A presentence investigation (PSI) was ordered in the case. A PSI is a report generated by the Department of Corrections that examines the crime, the defendant's history and recommends a sentence.
