Two killed in separate crashes

ELKHORN — The Walworth County Sheriff's Department reported two fatal crashes occurred on Sunday, including one that appears to have involved alcohol.

Charges have been referred to the Walworth County District Attorney's Office against Craig Michael Seefeldt, 50, Whitewater, for drunken-driving homicide, drunken-driving causing injury and reckless driving endangering safety.

Seefeldt is being held in the Walworth County jail.

Melissa J. Patrick, 40, Whitwater, was attempting to turn into a driveway when her 2005 Ford Freestyle SUV was hit from behind by a 2014 Chevy Malibu, reportedly driven by Seefeldt.

The impact shoved the Freestyle into a ditch where it rolled over. Patrick was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The accident occurred at about 4:53 p.m. on Highway 89 south of Island Road in the town of Whitewater.

A girl in Patrick's vehicle was taken by ambulance to Fort Atkinson Hospital with "moderate injuries," according to a Walworth County Sheriff's Department press release. The girl's relationship to Patrick wasn't reported in the press release.

The other fatal accident happened at about 3:46 p.m. on County Highway C west of Clowes Road, near the Rock County line in the town of Darien.

Stephen P. Schmitz, 65, Wheeling, Ill., was driving his 1999 Ducati motorcycle east when he struck a guardrail. After hitting the rail, Schmitz's motorcycle entered the westbound lane and was hit by a 2003 Dodge minivan.

Schmitz died at the scene.

Tina L. Langnes, 46, Lake Geneva, was driving the van. Her passengers included Adrian J. Eller,29, Janesville, and a juvenile boy and girl. No one in the van required medical attention.
