Bridge repairs will lead to lane closures on highways 12, 50

June 17, 2014 | 12:38 PM
Expect lane changes and lots of orange barrels on Monday, as workers direct traffic around reconstruction along the Highway 12 and state Highway 50 interchange in Lake Geneva.

Work began on May 27, said Brian DeNeve, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation’s southeastern Wisconsin region.

Crews are now preparing the interchange for a traffic switch on 12, putting all traffic onto the westbound side of the road, he said.

The highways will remain open during construction, with traffic reduced to one lane each direction, DeNeve said.

However, there will be some nighttime closures on 50 for bridge removal and girder placement, he said.

According to information provided by DeNeve:

• Various ramps on 12 and 50 will be closed at times during project construction, but detours will be provided.

• The DOT will replace the aging bridges that carry 12 over 50. Bike and pedestrian accommodations will be added on 50.

The existing concrete interchange was built in the 1960s and has been resurfaced many times since.

The asphalt resurfacings are deteriorating, creating a rough driving surface. Those rough surfaces will be smoothed.

The bridge clearances beneath Highway 12 over Highway 50 will be raised to allow commercial traffic on Highway 50 to safely pass under Highway 12.

Deficient guardrails will be replaced.

Also, the bridge decks on 12 are deteriorating and will be replaced.

Approaches on 12 will be rebuilt as loop ramps to accommodate the raised bridges and to provide additional merging distance and increase safety.

Right-of-way acquisition will not be necessary for this project.

Cost estimates for the highway construction were not immediately available.
