Woman allegedly stole from downtown businesses, sold items on eBay

A 50-year-old town of LaGrange woman faces a felony charge after sold allegedly stole items from Lake Geneva businesses and sold them on eBay.

Brenda K. Graff, W5928 Mariner Hills Ct., has been charged with felony retail theft.

If convicted, she faces up to 3-1/2 years imprisonment and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

Police were conducting an investigation around May 15 after several businesses reported retail thefts of jewelry and clothing.

On May 18, police spoke to Graff who said she stole items from Strawberry Fields, "the place next door," and a place that was "like a church."

Police learned that some of these items were listed on eBay. Graff told police that betweeen 40 to 50 percent of the items she had listed on eBay were stolen.

After going through Graff's eBay account, police identified 35 items that were stolen and sold through eBay between January and May of 2011.

Graff also turned over 14 items that were packaged for delivery, which contained items stolen from several Lake Geneva businesses.

The business owners valued the items positively identified as being taken from their stores at $2,677.

One business reported it lost about $5,000 in merchandise between February 2009 and June 2011. Many of the missing items matched the brand and type of items stolen by Graff.
