ELKHORN — A Janesville man is accused of sexually assaulting a resident of a retirement home when he was providing the woman with physical therapy.

Matthew G. Hendrickson, 56, has been charged with second-degree sexual assault. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years imprisonment and $100,000 in fines.

Hendrickson is free from custody on a $1,000 cash bond. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Dec. 16.

On Dec. 4, a resident of Golden Years of Walworth reported the sexual assault to police. The woman, who is 79, said she had physical therapy from a man who was not her regular therapist.

The woman reported to police that the man touched her in a sexual manner, according to the criminal complaint.

“For over 44 years the staff of the Golden Years has lovingly cared for and served many, many area seniors. Regrettably we can confirm that an allegation of misconduct was recently made against an individual who was temporarily working at the Golden Years as a subcontracted service provider,” Golden Years released in a statement. “We are wholeheartedly working with the Walworth Police Department and the Walworth County District Attorney’s office on this matter. As this is an ongoing investigation we are unable to comment any further. Please know each of our staff are very special, gifted and dedicated individuals that will continue to love and serve our residents.”

During the investigation, the police confirmed that Hendrickson was sent to Golden Years from the Greenfield Rehabilitation Agency through a medical staffing agency.

An officer interviewed Hendrickson, who said he saw the victim as a patient, according to the complaint.

During that interview Hendrickson admitted to touching the victim, according to the criminal complaint.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services website, Hendrickson is a licensed physical therapist assistant. As of Dec. 20, his license was listed as “current.”

The site states that his license was granted on July 17, 2013, and it expires on Feb. 28, 2015. However, the site doesn’t indicate whether Hendrickson first received his license on July 17 or if it was renewed on that date.
