A 42-year-old former Lake Como man was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison after he failed to update the sex offender registry.

Richard J. Schultz, who is incarcerated at Jackson Correctional Institution in Black River Falls, pleaded guilty Aug. 21 to the three felony charges related to the sex offender.

Schultz already is serving a prison sentence for exposing a child to harmful material and that sentence ends on July 13, 2014.

After that sentence ends, he will begin serving the sentence for failing to update the sex offender registry.

Prosecutors dismissed a felony burglary charge.

According to the criminal complaint on the sex offender registry violation:

On June 14, 2012, it was reported that Schultz was in "absconder" status for the sex offender registry.

On May 25, Schultz didn't show up to a scheduled appointment with his probation agent.

The owner of the Como Cabins, where Schultz was living, reported that Schultz was delinquent on his rent and no one had seen him since May 25, 2012.

On June 26, 2012, Schultz spoke to his probation agent and said he was on the "West Coast."
