February 26, 2013 | 02:00 PMFONTANA — The village may soon have a Cousins Subs restaurant located inside the Shell gas station on Highway 67 across from village hall.
The Fontana Plan Commission is expected to recommend that the village board approve the restaurant at its next meeting, March 4.
A sign for the restaurant chain will replace a previously-approved sign for the food mart and must be back-lit or down-lit, according to recommendations from the commission.
Fontana doesn't allow internally illuminated signs on any businesses within the village.
The sign must also be made of a material with a wood texture look.
The restaurant will be built into the current gas station's footprint, without increasing the size of the business.
Village Clerk Dennis Martin said he wasn't surprised with the commission's decision.
"We don't have any fast-food type restaurants around at all," he said after the meeting. "We have to go to the other end of Walworth for Subway."
Martin said the village probably wouldn't approve a stand-alone restaurant, but because the Cousins will occupy an existing business space, the restaurant won't clash with the surrounding community.
