An even numbered year means town supervisor spots Nos. 3 and 4 expire in April. Although would-be local politicians have until Jan. 3, 2012, to have their names on the ballot, some significant changes are already clear in the towns of Linn and Geneva.

If those who obtained candidacy papers thus far file in time, there may be a February primary in the town of Geneva.

But in the town of Linn, one longtime supervisor already filed his noncandidacy statement. In an e-mail last week, Linn Town Supervisor No. 4 Greg Holden, N1614 Reedsville Drive, announced his filing for noncandidacy.

"I want to spend more time with the family and the grandkids," Holden stated.

Not only was he a longtime town supervisor, Holden also logged in time on the Walworth County Board, the County Zoning Agency and the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.

Holden first was appointed to the Linn Town Board in 1994. He remained on the board until 2000, and also served on the Walworth County Board from 1996 to 2000. Also, he was appointed to the Zoning Agency, on which he served until 2010.

"I was also appointed by the governor to the Southeastern Regional Planning Commission in 2002," Holden stated. He added he resigned from the commission last April.

Holden returned to the Linn Town Board after being elected again in 2004.

Last week, Holden endorsed the current Town Board in response to questions about why he decided not to seek re-election.

"I have a lot of confidence in Jim Weiss as the current chair," he stated. "He communicates with the rest of the board members and does not make expenditures, promises or commitments without board knowledge. That was not always done in the past under the previous chairman. I guess that is why I feel good about not running this time around."

Holden also stated he wouldn't rule out returning to the board "at some point in time when the need arises."

"Eight years is long enough and this gives some of those who have been critical of the board an opportunity to step up to the plate and be able to contribute in hopefully a positive way by being part of the board," he stated.

So far, one person has filed some of the necessary documents to be a candidate for Holden's position.

On Wednesday, Dec. 14, Linn Clerk-Treasurer Sue Polyock said Craig DeYoung, N1486 Hillside Road, filed some of the documents to become an official candidate in the spring election.

She said DeYoung hasn't turned in the signatures yet. He needs at least 20, Polyock said.

Also, she said incumbent Supervisor No. 3 Jeanne Allis, W3691 Snake Road, hasn't obtained candidacy papers or filed noncandidacy. However, Polyock said "she has indicated she is running."

The deadline for noncandidacy statements is Friday, Dec. 23, by 5 p.m. The deadline for candidacy papers is Tuesday, Jan. 3, also by 5 p.m.

Geneva supervisors

On Dec. 14, Geneva Clerk-Treasurer Deb Kirch said incumbent Supervisor No. 3 Larry Kulik, W3768 South Shore Drive, has filed for candidacy.

But some people, a couple who are no stranger to town elections, have obtained papers.

Kirch said Tara Young, W3828 South Shore Drive, filed some of the necessary candidacy papers. The town of Geneva FunFestival organizer hasn't yet filed her signatures, Kirch said.

Young obtained papers to run for supervisor No. 4. Currently, that position is held by Steve Kukla, W3776 South Shore Drive, who hasn't yet obtained any papers, according to Kirch.

Former Geneva town chairman Dan Lauderdale, W3525 Park Drive, and Gene Decker, W4159 Hemlock Drive, also have obtained candidacy papers. Lauderdale was defeated in April 2010 by current Town Chairman Joe Kopecky.

If Decker files, this will be his third bid for a town supervisor position.
