January 02, 2013 | 02:44 PMAt 1:33 p.m. on New Year's Day the Lake Geneva Fire Department extinguished a fire on the third floor of the The Cove of Lake Geneva, 111 Center St.
Crew members from Lake Geneva's Engine 1 stretched a hose line to the hotel's third floor and attacked a fire in the kitchen area of one of the units. Other firefighters conducted a primary search and ventilated the structure.
A sprinkler head also activated, which helped contain the spread of the fire. The building was evacuated during the fire. No injuries were reported.
Mutual aid was received from area departments due to the size of the building. Water damage occurred on the third floor and in the units below the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was limited to the kitchen area in one unit. Firefighters spent several hours in salvage work and water removal. All units were back in quarters by 4:48 p.m.
While Lake Geneva firefighters were battling the blaze at the Cove, the Hebron Fire and Sharon Rescue departments responded to a roll-over vehicle accident at County Highway NN and Springfield Road. Designated neighboring departments automatically provide coverage at Lake Geneva Station 1 during extra alarm fires.
"We are thankful this fire was knocked down quickly by our crew. The sprinkler system, which functioned just as it was designed to, made a big difference in suppressing the fire," Fire Chief Brent Connelly said. "It was a tough way to start the new year, but we're glad no one was hurt. We are also very grateful for mutual aid departments that helped us out at the fire and for the motor vehicle accident."
