Things are looking good for Wisconsin right now. Over the last year, we have seen significant gains in the state and local economy. The housing market is rising, personal income is increasing, and more positive news of job growth has come to light. With the economy on the upswing, a brighter future for all of Wisconsin's citizens lay ahead.

The number one issue of the day remains job creation. In Wisconsin, we are making strides each month to reach and maintain positive numbers in this regard. Since the beginning of 2011, Wisconsin has gained more than 30,000 jobs and is on pace to add an additional 25,000 more jobs this year. For the first time since 2007, employment has increased in Wisconsin, with manufacturing jobs leading the way with the highest employment numbers realized in three years.

Each quarter, all employers covered under state or federal unemployment insurance are required to submit reports on staff and wage data in order to comply with tax and unemployment insurance regulations. This data is published by the national Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW). Because all employers must report this data, economists consider this QCEW information to be an accurate picture of jobs in the state. Taken from 96% of Wisconsin businesses, the QCEW data shows a gain of over 23,000 jobs in 2011 and 11,000 private jobs thus far in 2012.

Many more new jobs are being added all across the state. In the last month, announcements have been made of companies adding 350 jobs in Neenah, 30 jobs in Manitowoc, 100 jobs in Madison, 39 jobs in Racine and Franksville, 145 jobs in Wauwatosa, and 275 jobs in Brookfield. The state unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in years, and continues to fall. Wisconsin is now one of sixteen states to have a significant drop in unemployment, with a current rate of 6.7%, which is considerably lower than the nation's unemployment rate of 8.1%.

shadow
shadow
All this good news matches with what job creators have been saying for the last year. In fact, CEO Magazine recently improved Wisconsin's ranking as one of the best states to do business, up four spots from 24th to 20th. That increase is in addition to the huge jump Wisconsin made last year, from 42nd to 24th place. Average income is also on the rise, as per capita income increased by almost 5% in 2011, the largest gain in five years. Compared to other states, Wisconsin now ranks in the top quarter for personal income growth. In the housing market, both home sales and home prices are on the rise. Wisconsin has had ten straight months of double-digit sales growth, and home sales increased nearly 20% last month, compared to a year ago. In southeastern Wisconsin, home sales increased by more than 30%. Although the market has certainly fluctuated over the last few years, home ownership continues to be an attractive investment for families.

The state's budget situation is looking equally good. Last year, the $3.6 billion state budget deficit was eliminated without raising taxes, and while preserving a commitment to core services and programs. This year, tax revenues are doing better than anticipated, another sign of an improving economy. The state is expected to have a budget surplus of $154 million, which is more good news for taxpayers.

Beyond the hype and partisan rhetoric of the last year, the fact is Wisconsin is moving in the right direction. More people are working, the unemployment rate is decreasing, and personal income is growing. Wisconsin stands on firm fiscal ground and will continue down the path of job growth and economic success so long as we in the Legislature keep the jobs picture in our sights and in focus.

    RECALL WALKER
    May 30, 2012 | 11:05 AM

Why has Scott Walker transferred another 100,000 dollars from his campaign fund to HIS legal defense fund?

I thought he said he is not part of the John Doe investigation, although six of his past administration has been charged, pleaded, or have began to work with authorities...

The head of the DWD was appointed by Walker right? Why did his previous appointee resign?

All this talk about Illinois and we are still doing worse than them, and we've repealed women's and minorities rights to equal pay in WI, cut worker's rights, and gave corporations billions while cutting education by billions...

Walker and his state supporters are not creating the unity, pride, and environment WI was proud of. It's all about "Conquer and Divide", right out Scott Walker's mouth.

My teachers openly bash Walker though, and I've HEARD that a certain U.S. History teacher ALLEGEDLY (I'm NOT making any accusations) calls Gov. Walker "Hitler" in an attempt to brainwash students. The ironic thing is that Hitler brainwashed his pals, which is what teachers are doing. The only people that need more education are Barrett's supporters.

Why are we having this recall election? At first, it was a knee jerk reaction to ACT 10. Oops, can't run on that, it's working. Then it was the budget. Oops, can't run on that, it's balanced and probably with a surplus. Then it was jobs. Oops, can't run on that, Wisconsin has gained jobs under Walker. Now, it's mudslinging, rumor, and innuendo.

Still waiting for Tom's thoughts. How would he have balanced the budget? If ACT 10 is so bad, why did he use the tools given to him in his budget? What did he know and when did he know about the scandal involving his police department fudging reports to help the his city's crime statistics?

I know, maybe he'll build a trolley to connect every city in the state.

He signed bills changing the amount that can be awarded in an accident, tell me how much you'd want in compensation if your child was CRUSHED in front of your eyes?

He cut funds from education, that will not be effected UNTIL THIS YEAR! Your Children's educators will be cut, along with programs, BUT RICH PEOPLE LIKE SCOTT WALKER'S BIGGEST DONOR STILL WON'T HAVE to pay ANY taxes.

Loved to see all the blue "fisters" with their undies in a bunch.

It amuses me to see all the handwringing by the lefties over "divide and conquer". What a joke. The left has been using that tactic for years. What would you call the constant use of class warfare? What do you call the blame the "rich" strategy? What do you think it is when "da unions" and their thug members' interests are put above the regular taxpayer? It takes some nerve to be offended by whatever slight you think Governor Walker has done.

BTW, in response to the one poster whining about using the "mortgage" settlement, just a question. Were you EQUALLY as outraged when Jimmy and the D's used the tobacco settlement in the same manner? Were you equally as outraged when Jimmy and the D's stole from the road fund and the patients compensation fund? Were you equally as outraged when Jimmy and the D's simply refused to repay money owed to Minnesota? I didn't think so.

Here's what the unionistas and recall drones don't get. What you call divide and conquer, the rest of us call a necessary step in reining in the unions. What you consider "cutting spending", the rest of us consider eliminating wasteful spending. What you consider so called "illegal" activities, the rest of us see as nothing more than a political witch hunt.

What is regular pay, Hendricks is a BILLIONAIRE, made from the workers in her business...she asked Scott Walker when he could make WI a RIGHT TO WORK FOR LESS STATE and what could she do to help. HE said Conquer and divide the workers of the state.

Did you catch the article this morning about 21,000. billionaires paying NOTHING in taxes...they use the resources in our country like natural, tax payer incentives (AKA MY MONEY), roads, educated and skilled workers but pay NOTHING for it.

Your going to use the excuse of last administrations, for Scott Walkers abuse of power on workers in our state. He tried to call on the national guard because so MANY citizens were exercising their right as an American to protest.

The only person on here sleeping is you, but you will have a rude awakening IF Walker retains his seat and sells off WI natural resources to his friends for next to nothing, you do remember he changed legislation in WI to allow NO Bidding and closed records...another paper recently talked about corruption in the John Doe involving bidding.

The mortgage settlement directly effects the mortgage values of all property owners in our state. Those funds were to be used to refinance people so they can keep their homes. More foreclosures = lower values! NOT PLUG A HOLE in a budget, he says doesn't even exist!

Unions are not thugs! They are your neighbors collectively standing together for ALL workers rights, so right to work for less does not devalue workers and America. Unions are what separates us from third world labor.

American manufacturing over seas pays slave wages, .31 an hour...you want that wage, along with 36 hour days, and not allowed to go home and have to live at the factory...this is fact. It would take a lot of devaluing America, but we are on our way, wages and earning are down here.

Small business can NOT survive if the middle class has no money to support them, yet they are the LARGEST creator of JOBS in America!

Use some critical thinking...the only way to build America strong is to stand together as a union for human and worker rights. If we fail, so goes the world, and they are watching!

People power is what built this country, standing together undivided we can and will again!

Your teachers and public workers only make up A SMALL PERCENTAGE of taxpayers in this state. To take it a step further, their compensation far outweighs what they might pay in taxes so they are net takers.

You and Meya (who I think are actually the same person with a split personality) squawk about Ms. Hendricks' tax bill. I say MORE POWER TO HER. Nice to see someone decide to keep their money for themselves and not feel the need to send it to government to p*ss away. If I could manage my finances to PAY NO TAXES I sure as h*ll would and SO WOULD YOU. Scream and holler all you want, but if the rules are set up in such a manner that allows you to not pay taxes legally, you'd be an idiot not to take advantage of that. Our former financial mess wasn't due to lack of revenue, it was due to spending money like a drunken sailor, thankfully, that has come to an end.

Perhaps DJW/Meya should spend more time looking for ways to become successful and less time being envious of those that are. Then again, that's the Democrats way, complain about the rich and successful, demonize them and try to punish them rather than encouraging people to BE LIKE THEM.

Why is being in a right to work state a good thing? Simple, this isn't the good ol' days where a company had no options but to give in to union threats. Thanks to technology, a company can just about anywhere and still maintain service levels and customer bases.

If a company is looking to move or expand, just where do you think they'll likely look first, a state that supports business and offers a friendly business climate or one where they risk some union mouth-breather coming in and trying to run the show?

In a free market, prospering business creates jobs. The more businesses that prosper, the more jobs created. The more job openings, the more wages go up for people with skills. There's no need for some glorified mobster union to "negotiate" compensation when you have a booming economy and a climate that promotes job growth.

Just one last question? If unions are so great and such a benefit to the employee, why have the public unions in Wisconsin seen such a dramatic drop in membership in the last year? If they were all that and a bag of chips, wouldn't these people be more than willing to pay dues and stay with the union?

You stand in contradiction to your arguments...at one point you say union's wages are the problem in state finance...then in another you state union membership is low.

Let me educate you on facts, union membership earned you a 40 hour work week, minimum wage and work force safety standards.

Union membership has fallen since the 1980's when they came under attack by Republican ideology.

Since then ALL worker's pay has stagnated, safety standards have loosened, benefits have become nearly extinct and CEO's pay has expanded to the highest levels in this nations history.

So who is suffering? Not the big business owners, but the workers and small business that is supported by workers.

So Mizike, are you willing to give your employer your paycheck, because according to you, employers shouldn't have to pay a living wage, health benefits, our town should do without clean drinking water, sewer service, or anything else for that matter...THAT IS WHAT TAXES PAY FOR!!!!!

If you think a teacher's salary of 40,000. is outrageous, but a billionaire wants her workers to earn less income for the work SHE has benefited from, then you are a lost cause. THAT SAME BILLIONAIRE TOOK MY TAX DOLLARS for use in her business, but my children's education was cut!

Try again Meya, what I stated was that public union membership has fallen in this state in the last year, as a direct benefit from ACT 10. If those unions were doing such a great job or representing their "members", then why the decline in membership? Simple, once the union shackles were removed and they weren't FORCED to be in a union, the people spoke, and they spoke by LEAVING THE UNION. Doesn't speak too highly of "brotherhood" now does it?

Taxes are supposed to go for things like the good roads. I don't work as many hours as I do just so some coffee drinking union hack can have lavish benefits and retire at 55. I don't work as many hours as I do so some freeloading ne'er-do-well too lazy to get a job can get a free ride at our expense because they think they're entitled to a lifestyle of leeching off society. I don't, however, mind my taxes going to promote business and establish an atmosphere where owners WANT TO MOVE TO WISCONSIN. Those dollars result in people growing their companies, hiring people, and create a better economy for ALL OF US, not just a select few union members.

Just remember what FDR said about public unions....

Public sector unions fell off the rolls because of the first law that was passed, it made it almost impossible to unionize, BUT it was revised because there were parts found unconstitutional, but I guess something like that might happen when you have the FREE MARKET BUSINESS writing legislation through ALEC, those are responsibilities left to our elected officials representing the constituents of our state.

Anyhow, after the revision those unions that were pushed off the rolls were reinstated.

What do you not understand about PEOPLE AKA unions gathering to gather for a common cause? BUT It is okay for the Chamber of Commerce that is supported by tax payer money and represents business? It is really very hypocritical.

One last thing a job is NOT a service, a worker provides that service through his/her employer.

Vote for Barrett/Mitchell vote for integrity, community, and WI's future.

Voter fraud has NO statical basis less than 1% of voter fraud has occurred in the US or WI...mostly because Felons are not allowed to vote in some states, and voted because they did not know.

YOU CAN VOTE without an ID...

    I've already voted for Barrett/Mitchell.

I voted to put integrity back in WI.
