Time is now of the essence — for most people, the holiday to-do list seems to expand the closer to the holiday you get. It makes the prospect of one-stop shopping an appealing one.

Fortunately, this year there's a new place in town where shoppers can bring their lists — and a pen, because there will be a lot of crossing out.

Roses Fresh Market, 433 Broad St., Lake Geneva, opened late this summer and in that short time has attracted much attention. Fresh, local produce and grocery items, specialty foods, wines, treats and more have put the neighborhood market on the map already. And if you haven't discovered the shop yet, now is the perfect time to stop in and see what's new, fresh and seasonal.

The season always dictates what partners Rose Menella and Eric Rose carry at the market. The holiday season is no exception. Looking for a great hostess gift or stocking stuffer? Consult with the friendly, knowledgable staff and you'll come away with a gift sure to please. If you really want to wow someone, prepared and custom gift baskets are offered for anyone's budget and tastes. Extensive selections of cheeses, beer, wines, fine packaged foods and much more are always in stock.

There are surprises around every corner as well at Roses. Busy holiday schedules mean there's not always time to cook a fancy meal, but a quick stop at Roses will get healthy, tasty food on the table in record time.

"We're mindful of our locals who are pressed for time, especially during the week," Rose said. "We have the makings of a healthy meal at all times, and we are open until 9 every night."

It's no surprise that a market will carry select foods, of course. The surprise lays in the reasonable prices.

"We strive to find the best quality at the best prices," Rose said. "And it's all about the customers for us — when we first opened, we chose what we were going to stock. Since then, 75 percent of what we carry is now by customer request."

A quick glance at the shelves will reveal that Roses customers have very good taste. Current seasonal favorites include chestnuts, figs and "all kinds of bubbly" coming in for New Year's Eve, Rose said.

If you're getting worried about holiday entertaining, the staff at Roses is happy to help. The "Simple Entertaining" menu includes Wisconsin cheese (and sausage) platters from small or large groups, as well as olive and salad trays, roasted veggie trays and shrimp platters. Because they are created to order, advance calls are appreciated, but the staff is wiling to help out last-minute shoppers as well.

Because Roses is located just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Lake Geneva, there is free parking available. It's is open seven days a week.
