November 04, 2011 | 08:58 PMGREEN BAY - The undersized Big Foot volleyball squad faced a daunting task Friday evening in a Division 2 state semifinal against Catholic Memorial at the Resch Center, just across the street from Lambeau Field.
The two-time defending state champs feature three Division 1 recruits, including Aly Dawson, who signed with Marquette University as a freshman. With three Memorial athletes 5-foot-11 or taller compared to Big Foot's one, the Walworth bunch had to rely on its quicknesss and savvy.
But one thing you can't do against an elite team is get behind and make mistakes.
Big Foot stumbled out of the gates and found itself in a 2-0 hole, staged a valiant comeback, but finally succumbed to Catholic Memorial in a 25-15, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22 defeat.
The bigger, more athletic Crusaders proved too overpowering for Big Foot, often blocking kill attempts and redirecting potential hits.
Big Foot jumped out to a 16-11 lead in game four, but the Crusaders stormed back to finish the match.
The Chiefs ended their season at 40-5 and will forever reign as the first team to reach state in the program's 35-year history.
