Fontana — The upcoming year will be one of changes and adjustments in the village.

In 2009, a lot of changes are slated for the village and several projects are planned.

Village President Ron Pollitt has decided not to seek a second term, which means a new person will lead the community.

As of Monday, the only candidate to file paperwork for the position is Trustee Arvid "Pete" Petersen.

Also as of Monday, four candidates have filed paperwork to seek three trustee seats.

Another change at Village Hall is Treasurer Peg Pollitt, who is Ron's wife, has resigned to become the Lake Geneva City Comptroller.

Village Administrator Kelly Hayden said the board hasn't yet discussed her resignation and whether they will replace, her or if it will adjust its staffing levels.

There are also several road and utility projects slated for 2009.

Storm water and utility projects are planned for Sauganash and Shabbona drives.

The village also will continues to work with the village of Walworth to establish a joint fire and rescue service and a paid-on-premises service fire and rescue service.

The economy

Hayden said the village also will carefully watch its funds during the current economic downturn.

"It's an adjustment year in getting used to what's happening in the economy," Hayden said.

Hayden said it's unclear how the economic downturn will affect village activities.

She said this past summer provided the village with its most financially successful beach season ever and more local residents went to the beach.

"Maybe it's more economical to stay local or maybe it was the good weather," she said.

Hayden predicts that another summer staple in Fontana, the annual Big Foot Lobster Boil, will continue to see success despite the economic woes.

"There is so much support for the Lions Club," she said.

The village is also looking forward to its second Pig in the Park event this summer. The event is used to raise funds for playground equipment in Reid Park.

"Hopefully, we have another great year," she said.
