Lake Geneva -- It only took two matches Wednesday at the Badger Sectional for the Badger boys tennis squad to send three athletes to state.

At No. 1 singles, Dean Schwefel handled Westosha Central's Alex Ferruzzi, 6-0, 6-4, in his first action of the day. Schwefel later fell to Kenosha Bradford's Michael Savaglio, 6-4, 6-1, but Schwefel qualified for the state tournament June 3 through 5 at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.

Joining Schwefel in the state capital will be the No. 1 doubles team of Matt Heinz and Reid Solheim. The dynamic duo downed Racine Horlick's Max Bishop and Erik Skaarnes, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. They were later ousted by Kenosha Tremper.

Badger's remaining sectional qualifier, sophomore Dimitri Chironis, won his first match, 6-0, 6-0, over Horlick's Aaron Schields. However, Chironis will have to win the sectional in order to advance to state. Check wiaawi.org for updated results.

Gaugert lifts Badger to sectionals

Beloit -- Badger senior golfer Alex Gaugert had an afternoon to remember Tuesday at the Division 1 Beloit Regional at Krueger-Haskell Golf Course.

The standout shot an even-par 70 (34-36), earning the top individual score and leading Badger to a team score of 317, good enough for third place and a spot in Tuesday's sectional at Evergreen in Elkhorn.

Gaugert's stellar day made up for only one other Badger performer in the 70s, Ryan Garske (78). Chad Henry fired an 82, and Tyler Cuculi added an 87.

Chiefs move on

Jefferson -- A balanced effort extended the Big Foot golf team's season Tuesday at the Division 2 Jefferson Regional at Koshkonong Mounds.

Dylan Freytag and Collin Hubertz both tallied an 88, and the Chiefs rolled to a team score of 355, a fourth-place finish. Jake Dragonetti (89) and Paul Littig (90) weren't far behind for Big Foot, who will advance to the New Holstein Sectional Tuesday.
