Badger High School was rocking Friday night.

It was the first Southern Lakes home game for the Badger boys basketball squad, and the guys were poised to bounce back from a tough loss at Waterford Tuesday. The home fans and student section were at high volume, but it was the Wilmot Panthers whose sharp shooting silenced everyone in the gym, including the Badgers.

Despite entering the contest with a 1-3 record, Wilmot was on fire, draining eight three-pointers in a 67-54 victory. Badger dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the SLC.

The Badgers were able to hang with Wilmot until halftime, taking a 26-24 deficit into the locker room. But an 18-10 third quarter lifted Wilmot to a 10-point lead after three quarters, and the Panthers stretched the lead to 50-37 early in the fourth.

Senior guard Brendan Gruenwald-Schmitz paced Badger with 12 points, and freshman shooting guard Jacob Growel added 10. The quick-paced Badger offense tried to lean on fast breaks and quick shots, but the ball just wasn't finding the bottom of the net.

On the other hand, four Panthers drained triples. Matt Betz led with three, and two others added two each.

Badger displayed balanced scoring. Rob Slagle added eight points, while Bobby Lamparek contributed seven. Mike McBride and Colton Andresen tallied six points apiece for the local boys.

Gruenwald-Schmitz consistently penetrated the Wilmot defense and was able to get to the line nine times. He led the team with five free throws.

Badger will have next week off before returning home Tuesday, Dec. 21, to take on the Westosha Central Falcons.
