BREAKING: Badger boys sweep Broncos, other area scores
February 19, 2011 | 11:07 AMThe Badger boys basketball squad probably wouldn't mind playing Union Grove more than twice a year.
The Badgers swept the season series with the Broncos Friday night at home with a 56-52 victory.
The local boys improved to 3-9 in the Southern Lakes Conference and 3-17 overall. Badger previously beat Union Grove back on Jan. 21 in a 68-55 overtime thriller. The Broncos dropped to 6-6 in the SLC and 11-9 overall.
While freshman Jacob Growel lifted Badger to a win in the first meeting, another underclassman, sophomore Colton Andresen, sparked the team this time. Andresen came up big with 16 points including two triples against Union Grove Friday.
Badger was firing on all cylinders from long range with nine three-pointers. Along with Andresen, Will Swanson, Growel and Mike McBride each knocked down two bombs from beyond the arc. Brendan Gruenwald-Schmitz added the other three-pointer.
Swanson added 12 points, and McBride tallied 10.
Union Grove had a 30-25 advantage at halftime, but Badger busted out in the second half with a 19-11 third quarter and held on for the victory.
Badger will play its final home game Thursday against Elkhorn (10-11, 7-6).
