The Time is Now to Help

We may not be hurting, others are

May 04, 2011 | 07:49 AM
Dear W.C.,

I have had to move into my sister's basement. I was unable to pay my rent or utilities. I was evicted and would be homeless with my son and daughter, if not for my sister's help. She is a single mother working two jobs just to make ends meet. I am embarrassed and ashamed to be asking for charity. I have raised both my children and was always able to pay my bills. Due to the recession, the company I worked for closed, after being employed there for over 15 years. I lost my job and my dignity. Please help.

Dear Readers,

I receive many requests for help from our fellow Americans who have lost their jobs after 10 to 30 years of service, due to the recession.

This woman was lucky to have a sister to turn to, even if it was living in her basement. There is not enough emergency housing for those being evicted or losing their homes. Every week we are supplying emergency housing at motels for people living out of cars or referred to us by churches and other groups. This letter is just one of many people we offer a helping hand to. When I visited the mother and two children I found them living in a damp, partially-furnished basement, with small window wells. Yes, it was a roof over their heads, but it was hardly ideal.

Prior to my visit, I did check on the company the mother had worked for. I did confirm it was another American company that closed due to the recession and the unfair trade laws our government allows so Americans have to compete with slave labor factories overseas. Why is our government making the American people compete against very low pay and almost non-existent humane treatment?

The neighbor of these two sisters, and their children, a veteran who fought in World War II told me, "Our country has cries coming from the graves from those who fought for our freedom from the tyranny of the world. Why aren't our representatives protecting our people? Our government tells us "we" need to cut back. All the benefits for teachers, police, senior citizens, need to be cut, all while we provide great salaries and the best health benefits for our government employees." The war veteran told me, "Even our soldiers who fight for our country do not get family compensation; instead their families fall on hard times." This 20-year veteran made sense.

It is our taxes that create our U.S. Budget. Why is there not enough for us? Why does our government allow the import of gas to be over $4 a gallon all while our government is driving the middle class into poverty and driving the lower class into the ground so they can no longer afford gas, food, and rent.

When I met this mother I could see her eyes were swollen from crying. The children were confused because they could not understand why they had lost everything. The 15-year old child, her oldest, stood up for her mother saying, "My mother worked very hard for years. She is a good mother." The mother hugged her daughter as she began to cry. "Why did we lose everything?" she asked.

Together we found one of those rare jobs for this mother. She proved her daughter right; she was a very hard worker. She found an affordable apartment, which fit in her new budget. We paid her first month's rent and security deposit. They were so happy to no longer be living in the dark basement. The daughter wrote a thank you letter, "To all of you at The Time Is Now To Help, God bless all of you for helping my mother, brother and I. My mother does not cry anymore. My mother is excited to go to work and we all thank you for helping us to live in a place with windows. We are all so thankful for the sunshine."

Remember, we might not be hurting but our fellow creations are. The recession for millions of our fellow Americans is getting worse. Many jobs are being targeted for cutbacks and loss of benefits. Gas prices are still rising. Please understand my heart. I love all of God's Creations. It pains me when I find good people struggling in the pains of poverty, poverty that could be eliminated if our government really focused on America.

Together we make a big difference helping our fellow creations of God. Thank you for Caring and Sharing.

Health & Happiness, God Bless Everyone, W.C.
