Elkhorn — A 30-year-old Genoa City man, who allegedly broke into a neighbor's home and stole a safe containing $8,000 in cash, pleaded not guilty July 8 to several criminal charges.

Ryan J. Kamps, 770 Main St., Apt. 4, faces a felony burglary charge. The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 12-1/2 years imprisonment and $25,000 in fines.

He also has been charged with misdemeanor counts of theft, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In a separate incident in Kenosha County, Kamps pleaded guilty April 18 to a felony charge of substantial battery.

In that case, he is scheduled for a Aug. 26 sentencing hearing.

According to the criminal complaint:

A man's father-in-law checked on his home June 17 while he was out of town on vacation with his family.

The father-in-law contacted police after noticing a window screen and fire safe were missing.

When the man returned from vacation, he told police that the safe contained $8,000. He also reported that two iPod Nanos, an iPod Touch, his child's piggy bank and a bottle of alcohol were missing from the home.

The man reported no one knew he was going on vacation except for his neighbor's children.

Police went to the children's residence and knew the two adults who live there, a woman and Kamps.

Police later were given permission to search the residence by the woman who lives there.

Inside of a jacket pocket — which the woman said belonged to Kamps — police found an iPod Nano and an iPod Touch, which had the same serial numbers of the ones that were reported stolen.

Police also found a bag of marijuana and a pipe, which the woman said belonged to Kamps. Inside of blue tote bag, police found $3,300 in cash.

The woman who lives with Kamps said he was unemployed and hadn't worked since winter.
