JEFFERSON — All season, the Elkhorn swim team has been the cream of the crop in the Southern Lakes Conference.

While the Elks won the Southern Lakes meet Saturday at Jefferson High School, the Badgers reeled off a strong showing and proved they are no conference slouch.

The local water warriors won five of the 11 events and scored 416 team points, good for second place and 55 points ahead of third-place Platteville/Lancaster.

Badger coach Glenn Biller was a little surprised at how well his guys swam.

"Overall, it was an awesome meet," he said. "It was our best meet of the year. We dropped a lot of times. We won some battles but lost the war. But we stole some of Elkhorn's thunder and certainly turned some heads. We won some close races that I and a lot of others didn't expect us to win."

Biller gave credit to Elkhorn, which tied Badger with five total victories.

"They have great depth," he said. "They are three or four deep in each event."

Perhaps the best team effort for Badger came in the 200 medley relay. The team of Nick Herman, Luke Lemke, Joe Shane and Zach Zenner won with a time of 1:45.81, edging the Elks by less than a second.

Shane, a senior, shined individually as well. He picked up victories in both the 50 (22.94) and 100 (50.45) freestyles. In the 50, he narrowly sneaked by Elkhorn's Sean Collins (22.95). But in the 100, Shane trumped Collins by a second and a half.

Sophomore Remy Glogovsky nabbed a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.99. He also grabbed second in the 500 freestyle (5:13.32).

Badger's other winner was Lemke, who won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.17, less than a second ahead of Platteville's Ben Bahr (1:05.91). Lemke also grabbed second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.29).

The 200 freestyle relay squad of Lemke, Lucas Patten, Zenner and Shane took second with a 1:35.32.

Badger now advances to sectionals Saturday at Greendale High School.
