July 07, 2014 | 08:06 AM The United States Air Force Academy. Sixty years ago in June, 1954 a small but vocal group led by Mr. Curtis McKay led lengthy protests against the Secretary of the Air Force, who was to select the site for the future new military academy. Secretary Talbott was so angered by the anti-Lake Geneva protestors, that Lake Geneva, although the number one preferred location for the Academy, was removed from the top 3 list, due to the protest groups actions. Instead the Air Force chose Colorado Springs, CO. Today, the Air Force Academy is home to 4,000 Cadets, and it brings almost a billion dollars a year in federal funding and other spending into the local Colorado Springs economy. It all could have been in Lake Geneva...probably the worst mistake in the history of the community. That's what Lake Geneva is missing! It all went down 60 years ago in June. Tom Dickinson
