Emerald Ash Borer is a Serious Threat
June 22, 2012 | 05:19 PM

The headline "City Plans to Thwart Emerald Ash Borer" is very misleading. This pest has already killed MILLIONS of trees in Michigan and Ohio in the 10 years since it was found in the Midwest. Lake Geneva will be able to save some Ash trees, but chemical treatment of high value trees will be a band-aid on a gaping wound.
Wisconsin's forests have 770 million Ash trees. E.A.B. threatens every single one. That's 770,000,000 dead trees. The loss of 770 million trees will have devastating environmental and economic impact.
Local landowners and governments need to acknowledge this dire threat to our way of life. We need to educate the public about E.A.B. with real facts, however grim. We need to control for E.A.B. when and where it is feasible. Most importantly, we need to plant new trees to heal the destruction that Emerald Ash Borer will bring on our forests and livelihood.
