My condolences
September 04, 2012 | 08:24 PM

So many articles about the death of Kari, her friend, the Canadian sisters, etc. that I must say that I wholeheartedly disagree with anyone who says that SE Asia is safe to backpack around in, whether you are from the U.S., Europe, Australia.. Doesn't matter. It is not safe, that definitely includes Phuket and Phi-Phi islands. Do not buy into the areas being tranquil and safe as the tourism industry wants you to do. Standards do not exist here. I live in Thailand, and although there are well meaning authorities, most seem to be unable to perform their jobs properly. I meet many young travelers and they all seem unaware of the dangers. The authorities are corrupt. Anything to do with a death of an expat is quickly hushed because it may affect tourism. I applauded Kari for wanting to help teach, yet I would say from experience, help others in your own country and keep your children close. Once again, my condolences.
