KENOSHA — Badger varsity swim coach Glenn Biller was walking out of the gym soon after his team competed in the Badger Invite Saturday afternoon.

Much to his surprise, a lady approached him with a trophy and informed him of his squad's first-place finish.

"I wasn't thinking we won," Biller said. "I've never won this invite with the girls or boys. It was crazy and unexpected."

The Badgers edged second-place Kenosha Tremper, 267-264. Biller allowed the girls to set their choice of lineup for the meet. Apparently, he's on to something.

The girls won four events, including the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Also, Anna Brooks took first in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly. Brooks broke a school record for the second straight week, this time in the backstroke with a time of 59.35, which shattered the previous record by a second. In the 100 butterfly, Brooks won with a 1:01.97.

Biller said everyone improved.

"Everyone posted a season best," he said. "It was our best meet this year. Also, the girls are coming together as a team and are really cheering for each other."

In the 200 medley relay, Brooks, Leah Mikrut, Liz Carlson and Abby Chappel won with a 2:00.18. The 400 freestyle relay saw Evelyn Edge, Kaarin Quaerna, Amie Zick and Brooks bring home first with a time of 3:49.11.

Quarerna had a breakout day. The freshman also nabbed third in the 50 freestyle (26.28) and 100 butterfly (1:05.38).

"She has gotten faster every meet," Biller said of Kaarin. "She has a lot of natural ability."

Mikrut posted a personal best in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.86, and Zick also registered a personal best in the 100 backstroke, flying to a time of 1:05.20 for fifth. The 200 freestyle relay team of Carlson, Chappel, Breanna Shane and Edge grabbed third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.22.

Carlson also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:05.89.

Badger returns home Oct. 4 against SLC foe Elkhorn.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Chappel, Laura Kidder, Quaerna and Edge won the event with a 1:50.17, and the 400 freestyle relay (Quaerna, Edge, Carlson, Brooks) made it four victories in a time of 3:53.36.
