Illegal immigrant faces bail jumping charges

October 13, 2011

An illegal immigrant who was deported after he was convicted in 2002 of sexual assault, now faces two felony charges for failing to maintain the sex offender registry.

Fidel Torres, whose address is listed in court documents as 1004 Center St., Lake Geneva, has been charged with failure to maintain the sex offender registry and violating the sex offender registry.

If convicted of both counts, he faces up to 12 years imprisonment and $20,000 in fines.

In 2002, he was charged with three counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child, but was found not guilty during a jury trial.

However, Torres pleaded guilty to child enticement, false imprisonment and two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child.

He was sentenced to a year in jail and was deported on Feb. 28, 2003 to Mexico.

According to the criminal complaint:

Torres is required by law to provide annual updates to the Wisconsin sex offender registry but didn't provide updates in 2004 and 2005.

The law also requires Torres to notify the sex offender registry within 10 days after his place of residence changes.

However, Torres didn't notify the registry of his new address after he was deported.
