2012's top story: A new village
Establishing a new Bloomfield, annexation request, election tie kept communities in spotlight

To some, one of the most frequently asked questions of 2012 in Bloomfield was, "do I live in the town or the village?"

In late 2011, the majority of Bloomfieldians and the state allowed the incorporation of a 12-square-mile region of the town as a village.

While this generated some confusion when people went to the polls or paid their taxes, the workload for village and town officials increased.

"It's a very incredible task," Bloomfield Village President Ken Monroe said Oct. 26. "We're heading in the right direction, but as you know, it's a ton of work just trying to get everything put together in the town and the village."

That alone would have earned the creation of the new village of Bloomfield a spot at the top of the year-end list for the Genoa City-Bloomfield page. But on Dec. 20, 2011, the Bloomfield Village Board officially declared its intent to ask the Walworth County Circuit Court for an annexation order.

At that time the village board was comprised of the same members as the town board. But the outcome of the request likely won't be decided until 2013, at the earliest.
