Fire damages Pesche's

by Steve Targo

January 24, 2013

GENEVA — Police Sgt. Ken Mulhollon said not all of the buildings were damaged in an early Sunday morning blaze at Pesche's Greenhouse on Highway 50.

But he said when Town of Geneva police officers responded to the fire call at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 20, the southwest corner of the greenhouse was fully engulfed in flames.

"(The damage) was extensive," Mulhollon said. "There's no question about that."

Fire departments from Lake Geneva and Elkhorn also responded to extinguish the blaze.

On Jan. 22, Lake Geneva Fire Capt. Mark Moller-Gunderson said crews were there "several hours." He also said Fire Chief Brent Connelly praised crews for a "quick knock-down," meaning they doused the blaze with water right away. Moller-Gunderson said the weather at the time helped.

"If wind had been as bad as it was last week, several things just could have gone sour," he said.

No injuries were reported. The Walworth County Arson Task Force responded to investigate the fire.

"I don't believe they came out with a cause at this time," Mulhollon said.

He said town police officers closed down streets while firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

Police officers cleared the scene around 5:30 a.m.
