Fontana — Lou Loenneke and Bruce Jensen think the village president is trying to muzzle them and stop discussions on the lakefront ownership issue. Village President Arvid "Pete" Petersen said the two already have cost the village money, and by sending more information to Village Attorney Dale Thorpe, they are jacking up the bill. On Dec. 16, Petersen sent Loenneke and Jensen a letter stating they can't submit information directly to village staff. Jensen had faxed a letter from the Wisconsin Historical Society to Thorpe. Loenneke has questioned the lakefront in the past.

Conservation pact on hold

Williams Bay — The Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy newsletter carries the motto: "Dedicated July 1990 to the children of tomorrow." Harold J. Friestad, chairman of the conservancy's board of directors, believes he has the answer to preserving the 230-acre nature preserve for future generations, make it part of a conservation easement. After more than a year of preparation and negotiating with the Geneva Lake Conservancy, Friestad presented his proposal to the Williams Bay trustees, first at the Village Board's Parks and Lakefront Committee Dec. 15, and then at the full board on Dec. 20.

Walworth — As seasonal music plays, children will stand in front of Valerie Piechur’s home pretending to be maestros orchestrating a Christmas light and sound show.Adults have been known to park their cars near Piechur’s home at 208 Madison St. and dance on the sidewalk. At any other home in the village this would likely draw strange looks from the homeowners, but Piechur and her husband, Gary, don’t mind at all.

Walworth — After eight years as village president, Todd Watters will step down and a familiar face in local politics hopes to take his place.Trustee David Rasmussen announced he is running for village president. Watters is endorsing Rasmussen for the position. Watters, who has served four two-year terms on the board, also said the past year has been difficult for him and his family because of “work-related concerns.”

Fontana — The village attorney is creating a moratorium on development because of concerns unwanted growth may sneak into the community as officials rewrite zoning codes.If the temporary ban on development is put in place it would likely prohibit rezones, subdivision applications and condominium plats. Earlier this month, the Village Board directed Village Attorney Dale Thorpe to draft a moratorium prohibiting certain development as the zoning code is rewritten.

Walworth — Walworth County is a playground every winter for snowmobile enthusiasts who enjoy the scenic trails that are unique to southeastern Wisconsin. After the snow begins to fall, locals and Illinois residents alike begin hitting the paths, but there is one issue that makes the winter recreational activity a little more challenging. Finding places to refuel, change oil and purchase maps are becoming fewer and further between. A couple years ago, the village prohibited access to two gas stations, which further complicated the problem.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Task Force is seeking help from the public in locating a 44-year-old man who has an active warrant for allegedly sexually assaulting a child.Michael T. Grant’s last known address is on Constance Boulevard in the village of Williams Bay.Grant, who also goes by Tim Grant, is known to frequent horse shows and has worked as a horse trainer in the past. He could currently be employed as a horse trainer, according to the press release.

Walworth — Sometimes it only takes a smile to make someone’s day. Other times it just takes the wag of a tail. Dakota, a German Shepherd mutt, wags his tail every other Wednesday at the Golden Years of Walworth, sharing his furry smile to residents. As a therapy dog, Dakota allows residents to pet him, cuddle up next to him and sometimes he even gives residents kisses.

Fontana — One trustee’s argument was the proposed development doesn’t jibe with the village’s recently adopted Master Plan. Other trustees admitted they received overwhelmingly negative feedback on the proposal by Steve Beers. However, it was difficult to find a legal reason to deny the Hawks Woods proposal.On Monday night, Beers’ development was approved on a 5-2 vote. Village President Arvid “Pete” Petersen and trustees Patrick Kenny, Peg Pollitt, Thomas McGreevy and George Spadoni voted in favor of it. Trustees Cynthia Wilson and Micki O’Connell voted against it.

Tornado creates scary moments at local schools

Fontana — “The lights did flicker a few times and those were silent moments,” Walworth Elementary Principal Pamela Larson said last Wednesday, two days after a tornado touched down only a few miles from the school.On Monday, Nov. 22, a tornado touched down on Lakeville Road in rural Walworth. At the school, students, teachers, parents and even bus drivers waited patiently in secure locations within the building hoping the storm would pass.After the storm ended, four homes in rural Linn and Walworth townships were damaged, but the tornado didn’t affect the school. During the storm, administrators took precautions to keep kids and adults safe.

Walworth — It isn’t an easy subject to approach. However, the state law has changed on how schools teach it, and Walworth Elementary School is discussing how that will affect its curriculum. A group of parents and educators are reviewing the school’s human growth and development curriculum and whether the school will continue teaching it.
