Accident occurred last NovemberApril 14, 2011Elkhorn — "The horrific site I witnessed was an image no mother should have to see of her child," Nicole Dorwin said while crying.
On Nov. 16, Jeremy Dees, 33, of Elkhorn, crashed his Jeep into Nicole's sedan on Highway H near the Como Flats. At the time of the crash, Nicole's children, Carter, 9, and Bradley, now 6, were in the back seat.
"I knew something really bad had happened before I turned around to help my children," Nicole said. "My 9-year-old son, whose face was unrecognizable, was dead. Just like that, on Tuesday morning on the way to school."
January 20, 2011Lake Geneva city officials are a few steps closer to purchasing about 60 acres of environmentally sensitive land which weaves along the White River through the former Hillmoor property.
While the long-term future of the Hillmoor land remains unknown, the city apparently is moving toward buying part of the property with help from a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Urban Rivers Grant.
City Administrator Dennis Jordan said the 50-50 grant is expected to be about $90,000. He said the city will have to chip in the same amount as the state.
January 20, 2011Since the summer of 1928, the Geneva Theater has been a fixture in downtown Lake Geneva. For a long time, it was the only theater in the area.
But, things have changed. The property has been on the market for $949,000. Now, with a possible purchase of the property in the works, some local historians are hoping a piece of the building's history can be saved.
Lake Geneva Historic Preservation Committee Chairman Ken Etten said a number of interested community members have met to discuss the future of the building. He also has discussed the possibilities with local leaders and groups.

Man who killed boy in crash receives maximum sentenceApril 07, 2011Elkhorn — A man who killed a 9-year-old boy while speeding and driving in the wrong lane of traffic received the maximum sentence for his crime Thursday afternoon.Jeremy C. Dees, 33, 270 W. Centralia St., was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and five years extended supervision.Carter M. Dorwin, who was a student at Eastview Elementary School at the time of his accident, was killed Nov. 16 after Dees’ vehicle struck the Dorwin’s car on Highway H in Geneva Township near the Como Flats.
Borrowing questions loom for councilApril 07, 2011The borrowing and bonding of more than $3 million to pay for capital projects, including a new fire truck, is expected to be on Monday night’s City Council agenda.However, the details of how the borrowing and bonding will occur and whether it will be approved remain in question.During the past two months, the City Council has approved the intention of borrowing up to $875,000 to buy a new aerial platform fire truck, which will replace the current 1988 ladder vehicle. During previous council meetings, aldermen also approved borrowing about $2.2 million for road repairs and equipment needs for the fire, police and public works departments. That makes the total more than $3 million for capital improvements that must be used during the next three years.

Callahan Jr.But, there will be some written demands and offers between the two parties expected to be made prior to that conference.“The purpose of this mediation is to permit an informal discussion between attorneys and parties on all aspects of the lawsuit that bear on settlement,” Callahan wrote in his order. “To promote a full and open discussion, communications occurring during the mediation/settlement conference cannot be used by any party with regard to any aspect of this litigation.”
BREAKING - Principal agreement made for purchase of Lake LawnMarch 24, 2011Delavan - An agreement for the purchase of Lake Lawn has been made and now the documents are in the hands of attorneys to legalize the sale. On Friday afternoon, as many as 13 banks who are stakeholders in the foreclosed property, agreed to sell Lake Lawn Resort to Jim Drescher and his group of local investors for $9.5 million. The agreement came on the heels of a few weeks of work by Drescher negotiating with bank officials, specifically Patrick Wright of Anchor Bank.Because the property was in foreclosure, Drescher said it should be a relatively easy closing as a quick claim deed. Drescher and his group of investors are purchasing the property "as is" with their cash offer. Drescher and his investors raised about $12 million during the past few months in an effort to buy the property and reopen it.
