BREAKING -- State track, day two: Kunz, 400 relay medal in record-setting day

June 03, 2010
La Crosse -- The Badger boys track squad may not be returning to Lake Geneva with a state title, but thanks to the efforts of Jarek Kunz and the 400 relay team on Saturday, it now boasts three state medalists and two new school records. On an overcast and eventually rainy day at the state track meet on the UW-La Crosse campus, Kunz nearly catapulted his way to a state championship in the triple jump. Thanks to a leap of 46-3.5, Kunz held the best mark with only two jumps remaining in the competition. Unfortunately, those jumps came from La Crosse Logan's Kenny Winslow and Cedarburg's Josh Dixon, two opponents seeded higher than Kunz. Winslow only scored a 46-1, but Dixon saved his best for last. After scratching on the previous jump, Dixon landed a 47-5, good enough for first place. Kunz ended up second, then immediately hustled over to prepare for the 400 relay race. Kunz's leap was a personal best and set a new school mark. But he wasn't done with the record books.

State track, day one: Bowers scores second; Relay seeded first

June 03, 2010
La Crosse -- Is it possible for a student-athlete to be too athletic? Badger senior Justin Bowers competed in the long jump and 400 relay Friday in the state track meet at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. But Bowers' overwhelming ability combined with an unusually extended long jump session threw the standout's routine upside down. During preliminary warm-ups for the long jump, which lasted around two hours due to impromptu meetings from officials over the eligibility of two competitors, Bowers was warmed up and ready to jump. But the delay of the event caused it to occur simultaneously with the 400 relay, and Bowers was forced to run in the relay (as the anchor) and quickly return to jump.

BREAKING -- Lady Badgers can't tame physical Indians

June 03, 2010
Mukwonago -- For the first 20 minutes Thursday night, the Badger girls soccer squad, seeded 10th in its sectional, showed high energy and flew around the field. The girls entered halftime in a 1-1 tie with seventh-seeded Mukwonago, and things were looking up. But the Indians, a bigger team that plays in a bigger conference, starting flexing their muscles in the second half. Thanks to an overpowering effort that out-muscled the quicker Badgers, the Indians won the regional opener 2-1 and advanced to face Kenosha Tremper in a regional final Saturday. Badger finished its season 10-13-1 and will lose seven seniors to graduation including Shannon Tenney, Beth Sanders, Amanda Bartz, Meg Wickersham, Hannah Green, Rebecca Warnecke and Molly Schulting.

Badger pounds Panthers in playoffs

June 03, 2010
Badger senior pitcher Jake Hodgeman didn't want Tuesday's playoff opener against Racine Park to be his last game wearing the red and black. So, Hodgeman, like any good leader would, did something about it. He allowed just one run over six innings and scattered five hits to help propel the Badgers to a 9-2 blowout win at Jonas Field. Hodgeman was able to cruise up and down the Park lineup thanks to an early 6-0 Badger lead.
