Annual boat races coming to lake

August 12, 2010
Fontana — There's nothing like the picturesque beauty of Geneva Lake. The warm sun beating down. The waves allowing boats to glide along comfortably. Drinking a refreshing beverage surrounded by loved ones. But then, all of a sudden, 60 boats are in your back pocket, poised to race up to speeds of 60 miles per hour in the spirit of competition.

It's all in the genes

Lorenzi will swim D1 this fall in Big East

August 12, 2010
Former Badger swimming standout Ellie Lorenzi, a 2010 graduate, has swam competitively since she was 7 years old. And amazingly, those same swimmers she started with — Emily Russart and Lindsey Mikrut — have been with her both in and out of the pool ever since. The three, plus Badger senior Maddie Clark, won the state title in the 200 medley relay back in 2008, and Lorenzi competed in the event at state all four years, and she isn't done breaking records and winning races.

Legends of the Fall
August 05, 2010
Bloomfield Township — Lake Geneva resident Brett Padjen is definitely a baseball guy. He loves the game so much that the 50-year-old might even form a team of alumni players for Fall Ball, an annual league open to any incoming high schoolers. The league has six teams right now, but the goal is to have at least eight teams. But Padjen isn’t sweating semantics.“I would play if I have to,” Padjen said. “We will even field an alumni team if it worked out that way. But I’ve received interest from Woodstock, Ill, and Union Grove, so I think we should be fine.”

NFL flag football program coming to city this fall thanks to YMCA
August 05, 2010
Every day at recess, what sounds like thousands of kids can be heard hooting, howling and seen hustling during football at Central-Denison Middle School. Eight-year-old Jackson Biller is one of those football fanatics, and his dad Glenn along with the Lake Geneva YMCA is pioneering a co-ed flag football league for kindergarteners through sixth-graders in Lake Geneva this fall. The league is sponsored by the National Football League, and those who register by the Aug. 15 deadline will receive a free NFL jersey to wear in games. However, those not signed up by that date will still be able to play, but will receive a T-shirt instead.
Area football schedules released
July 29, 2010
High school football schedules were recently released, and that could spell good news for Badger and Williams Bay but prove troublesome for Big Foot. Badger, who finished 9-3 overall last year, will have to travel to Burlington and Waterford but will host Delavan-Darien and Union Grove, two squads the locals lost to last year. The Bulldogs will earn their first victory since 2007 because Madison Abundant Life can't field a team. The forfeit win will account for at least one win, and this year the Bay has five home games and doesn't have to battle small-school powerhouse Brookfield Academy, who badly routed them last year.
Two and through for Genoa Senior Legion
July 29, 2010
Genoa City — The numbers game plagued the Geneva/Genoa Senior Legion squad all season, and it finally caught up to the Red Legs at the worst possible time — regionals.Friday marked the end of the season with a heartbreaking 8-7 defeat at the hands of the 17U Union Grove squad. Geneva/Genoa finished its campaign 15-12 overall. Coach Curt Andresen said it was a disappointing way to end the season.“We were missing a lot of players,” he said Monday. “With all of our guns, we would’ve been fine. There was just a lack of communication between the players and me all season.”
Wicked wrestling invades Lyons
July 29, 2010
Lyons — A four-cornered ring. Stop signs. Barbed wire. Baseball bats. And don’t forget scantily-clad girls with signs containing numbers. How could these five things possibly have anything in common? There’s only one explanation — Wicked Wisconsin. The independent professional wrestling promotion, spear-headed by Linn resident Morgan Foley, 24, stormed into Bobby Rockets Friday, bringing its unique brand of entertainment.

Game to continue Friday
July 22, 2010
Beloit -- The game was only two innings old before Mother Nature reared her ugly head into the equation Thursday night at Pohlman Field, the home of the Beloit Snappers. Thanks to heavy lightning and severe thunderstorms, the Geneva/Genoa Senior Legion's regional tilt with Union Grove will resume in the third inning Friday at 5 p.m. at the same location, 2301 Skyline Drive. The Red Legs had fallen behind 4-1 after two innings before a third-inning double by Colter Beck, a single by Clint Andresen and a Sawyer Tisch (Wilmot) sacrifice fly cut the lead to 4-3. However, continual lightning rods which were first ignored eventually stopped the action.
‘Wicked’ wrestling coming to Bobby Rockets
July 22, 2010
Lyons — Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Wrestling gods in their own right, they all had to start somewhere. The next Hulk or Rock could be performing July 23 at 5 p.m. at Bobby Rockets at Wicked Wisconsin’s wrestling promotion. According to Bobby Rockets owner Bob Flores, the “festival” will include live music beginning at 3 p.m. followed by wrestling at 5 p.m. and four or five bands performing the rest of the night until bar closing time.

Badger football itching to improve after excellent 2009 campaign, 9-3 mark
July 22, 2010
Last fall, the Badger football squad had one of its most successful seasons in school history — a 9-3 record and qualifying for the third level of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs. But the success was the culmination of something more than just football. The season didn’t start with the first game. It started in June as soon as school was out. The football players were in the weight room three times a week, sometimes more, to prepare for their magical run. This year, there is even more dedication. Coach Matt Hensler has seen many more players in the weight room on a consistent basis since June, and the players are excited to build upon last season’s winning foundation.
Geneva/Genoa suffers sweep
Team hoping for full roster in regionals
July 15, 2010
Genoa City — The Geneva/Genoa Red Legs are stumbling into the playoff picture. That’s because last weekend the boys dropped both games of a doubleheader, 15-7 and 2-0, to Beloit, considered to be one of the top two teams in Region 7 along with Burlington. Once again, the Red Legs fell victim to the numbers game. They were without Jake Hodgeman along with several other top players. However, they have still found a way to possess a 15-9 mark heading into regionals Wednesday, July 21 at Telfaer Field in Beloit, home of the Minnesota Twins Single-A affiliate Beloit Snappers.

Tuesday marked another Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and the Milwaukee Brewers were well-represented during the festivities. In Monday’s home run derby, Corey Hart led all players with 13 home runs in the first round but failed to hit one in the second, causing his elimination. Hart didn’t hit in the second round until an hour and a half after his first-round performance. He seemed visibly fatigued, and he admitted that he didn’t feel right in a post-derby interview.
