June 09, 2011Madison — What a difference a day makes. Just 24 little hours.
That's all it took for the Badger boys golf team to turn its fourth straight state trip into a memorable one Tuesday at University Ridge.
After shooting a 334 and placing 10th on day one Monday, the local boys bounced back in style, bumping up to eighth overall with a 323 Tuesday to finish with a 657.  |

June 09, 2011Madison — Heading into last Thursday's Division 1 state tennis meet, Badger boys coach Marty Badt had a simple goal for his boys — win a match at state.
The No. 1 doubles team of Matt Heinz and Reid Solheim heard their coach's plea loud and clear, scoring the first win for Badger in several years. They downed Madison Memorial's Josh Blumenfeld and Ahmed Abdelhameed, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6, before losing in the second round. Badt said the win was big for the Badger program.
"It's always nice to see all the coaches and have them remember Badger," he said. "With a win and playing on multiple days, everyone learns where Badger is. Matt and Reid played really well. The other team was good, but we played a little better overall." |

January 20, 2011Menomonee Falls — In high school basketball, teams hope to play their best in late January and February to gain momentum heading into the March playoffs.
In the case of the Faith Christian boys basketball squad, the Eagles are peaking at the right time.
With two convincing victories last week, the Eagles are winners of four straight games and are now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the Indian Trails Conference. Coach Brian Pollard is pleased with his team's recent hot streak. |

January 20, 2011Everything about Sunday morning was unorthodox.
It started with me, a 28-year-old, mostly out of shape, former quarterback, waking up at the crack of dawn and driving 30 minutes to Williams Bay from Burlington.
What I did at Williams Bay High School at 9 a.m. was for the love of journalism but could be construed by outsiders as straight-up crazy. |
Recent Sports La Crosse, here we comeJune 02, 2011Last Thursday at the WIAA Division 1 Badger Sectional at Badger High School, Tristan Sproul and Megan Mulligan weren’t about to let the season end for the Badger girls track squad. Sproul, a sophomore, and Mulligan, a senior, are headed back to this weekend’s state meet for a second straight year at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse after combining to qualify in five events including three individual spots and two relays. Mulligan took second in both the 100 (13.14) and 200 (26.6). The standout just missed out on the sectional title in the 200 by .04 seconds behind Janesville Craig’s Maggie Slatter, who also edged Mulligan in the 100. Furthermore, Mulligan along with Annie Gaugert, Carly Beil and Alyssa Humphrey qualified for state in the 400 relay, taking second in 51.02 seconds, less than a second behind Waterford’s 50.63.
Tennis trio state boundJune 02, 2011Elkhorn — At a WIAA Division 1 boys tennis sectional at the Four Lakes Athletic Club May 25, the local boys didn’t take long to punch a few tickets to Madison.In took only the first two hours in an all-day event, and Dean Schwefel at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Reid Solheim and Matt Heinz were already headed to state. Overall, Badger coach Marty Badt was happy to get at least one state qualifier. Schwefel (16-2) opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Union Grove’s Zach Dam to qualify for state. Badt commended the opening match of Schwefel. The senior qualified for state for the third straight year.
Opposing hitters can't weather StormsMay 26, 2011Williams Bay — Sophomore ace pitcher Sam Storms was a strikeout machine for the Williams Bay softball squad last week. The young fireballer lived up to her name, tossing stormy, nasty pitches past 18 batters Friday in a 7-5 home victory over Dodgeland. The Bay finished the season 12-7 overall and 10-4 in the Trailways South Conference. They are second in the Trailways South, 3.5 games behind conference champ Deerfield.The Bulldogs rallied to win nine of their last 11 games after starting the season 3-5. Coach Jeff Kuespert said adjustments were key to the strong finish.
Track stars moving on up ... to sectionalsMay 26, 2011Waterford — The WIAA Division 1 Waterford Regional proved fruitful for both the Badger girls and boys track squads Monday night. The two teams combined to advance athletes in 23 events to Thursday’s sectional at Badger, including champions in five events. Starting with the girls, the team took second in the nine-team tournament with 120 team points behind champion Waterford’s 152.
Kolnik marches on to next levelFreshman takes care of business at subsectionalMay 26, 2011East Troy — The Big Foot/Williams Bay boys tennis squad entered Monday’s Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 subsectionals with the best of intentions, but three big road blocks, Madison Edgewood, McFarland and Monroe, stood in its way. In a meet where it’s lose and your season is over, only freshman Adam Kolnik at No. 1 singles was able to advance to sectionals. All other flights failed to move on to sectionals Wednesday at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Big Foot coach Jim Karedes said it was a tough subsectional.“We played near our ability,” Karedes said Monday night. “But we would’ve liked to see a little bit better showing. But it was tough with Edgewood, McFarland and Monroe.”
Chief Dogs barking in RVCMay 19, 2011Elkhorn — The Big Foot/Williams Bay girls soccer squad demonstrated a flair for the dramatic last weekend at the Elkhorn Invite, and it paid off big time. The girls won the tournament, going 3-0 with three shootout victories. The girls improved to 12-5-1 overall. Coach Annie Isham had mixed feelings on the day. “It was very unusual to win all the games by shootout,” she said. “It was an exciting day for our goalkeeper Katie Pearce. I’m glad we won, but winning all three by shootout isn’t what you want.”
Bringing home the conference hardwareBadger netters earn team championship, five individual titles at SLC meetMay 19, 2011Wilmot — At the beginning of the spring tennis season, the goal was simple for the Badger boys squad — win the Southern Lakes title. After last season’s second-place finish to champion Waterford by one point, the team was poised to erase the bad taste from its mouth and achieve conference excellence. It took three separate days and plenty of inclement weather, but the Badgers made it a clean sweep of the regular season and conference tournament titles with a dominant victory Monday at the SLC meet. Badger dominated the competition, earning 38 points, 10 ahead of second-place Westosha Central. Also, the Badgers boasted five individual champions.
Hitting lifts Lady Badgers to three straight winsMay 12, 2011After a rough 1-5 start to the season, the Badger softball team has reeled off four wins in its last five games.Last week, the Lady Badgers picked up three big Southern Lakes Conference victories to improve to 4-4 on the season. Also, the girls are inching closer to .500 with a 5-6 overall mark. On Monday night at home, Badger fired out to a 7-0 lead after three innings en route to an 8-0 shellacking of Delavan-Darien.
Bay annihilates Falcons, now 8-6May 12, 2011Hustisford — The Williams Bay softball squad walked all over Trailways South foe Hustisford Monday night, literally. The Lady Bulldogs drew 16 walks and were hit by four pitches in a 19-0 laugher in five innings. With the win, the Bay improved to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in conference.
Badger netters serving up perfectionMay 12, 2011Janesville — Heading into this week’s Southern Lakes Conference meet, the Badger boys tennis squad is giving a new meaning to the word momentum. On Friday, the Badgers won three dual matches at the Janesville Parker quad to improve to 9-0 overall on the season. With the SLC meet looming Thursday and Saturday this week, the local boys are oozing with momentum. Coach Marty Badt knows there’s still work to do.
