Big crowd, strong special teams highlight memorable nightJuly 14, 2011Williams Bay — It was pandemonium Saturday at Williams Bay High School.
So much so that after the Lake Geneva Generals' season-opening 45-0 rout of the visiting Joliet, Ill., Buccaneers, the Generals doused coach Derek Diehl with a Gatorade bucket bath. According to Diehl, it even wrecked his cell phone. He has since purchased a new one.
But it was simply good fun all in the name of victory. |

January 20, 2011Menomonee Falls — In high school basketball, teams hope to play their best in late January and February to gain momentum heading into the March playoffs.
In the case of the Faith Christian boys basketball squad, the Eagles are peaking at the right time.
With two convincing victories last week, the Eagles are winners of four straight games and are now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the Indian Trails Conference. Coach Brian Pollard is pleased with his team's recent hot streak. |

January 20, 2011Everything about Sunday morning was unorthodox.
It started with me, a 28-year-old, mostly out of shape, former quarterback, waking up at the crack of dawn and driving 30 minutes to Williams Bay from Burlington.
What I did at Williams Bay High School at 9 a.m. was for the love of journalism but could be construed by outsiders as straight-up crazy. |

Generals seek playoffs in first yearOwner Diehl takes on head coaching, coordinator dutiesJuly 07, 2011Williams Bay — When Derek and Jeni Diehl heard of the May 22 devastation caused by a tornado that ripped through Joplin, Mo. and killed 139 people, it weighed heavily on their hearts.Derek, the owner and head coach of the Lake Geneva Generals, Jeni, and six members of the team made the trip down on Memorial Day weekend to help out. Thanks to some social networking, Jeni was able to muster up donations of everything from food for victims and gas to an RV to take down to Joplin. The Generals were able to unload trucks, give bulk food to a Christian center and build relationships. For Derek, it was an amazing experience.“We helped a couple brothers found 11 days after the tornado still stranded in the basement,” he said. “Half the community was wiped out, and they didn’t have a place to eat. Now some people down there want to come up for a game. When there’s a crisis, we really stick together as Americans. Lake Geneva and Burlington were a big part of that. It shows the support we have. The Generals are doers. We’ll help out in the community.”
Walworth boy aiming highJune 30, 2011Walworth — Talk about shooting for the stars. Sharpshooter Chris Long’s impeccable aim has helped him drill target after target in life, whether it’s enduring diabetes, firing at clay pigeons or making new friends. The 14-year-old Walworth resident recently won the Southwest Zone Handicap trap shoot competition in Janesville, and he will move on to the state competition in mid-July in Waukesha and nationals in Sparta, Ill., in the beginning of August.

It’s been quite the offseason for Romo, including marriage, overcoming a broken collarbone and the ongoing issues regarding the NFL lockout.

Unlimited bounce house jumping will be available for a $5 wristband. Concessions, merchandise and team apparel will also be on sale.
Recognizing the bigger pictureJune 23, 2011Walworth — Sometimes, a basketball game isn’t just about canning a wide-open three-pointer or weaving through the lane for a layup. Sports can transcend simple competition, and that was epitomized Friday at the annual Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 all-star game. Some of the best basketball players in the state migrated to the University of Wisconsin-Madison field house for the annual event, which benefited the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fund. Along with solid competition, players were able to spend time with young cancer victims and survivors.Big Foot graduate Courtney Spangler soaked it all in. The former Lady Chief standout played for the Division 3 South squad, which lost 74-61 to the North Squad. Spangler, a 2011 first-team all-Walworth County pick and all-Rock Valley South selection, scored seven points, good for third-best on the squad. She acknowledged the importance of playing against the MACC Fund and the honor of being selected as an all star.
Adding injury to insultJune 23, 2011Genoa City — Last week was anything but ideal for the Genoa City Senior Legion squad. Along with three losses, the boys received some disheartening news on Monday. One of the club’s top pitchers, Badger junior Colton Andresen, broke his ankle at a basketball camp and will miss the rest of the season. Head coach Gary Kukla said several pitchers must step up in the young star’s absence.
Kukla takes over SeniorsJune 16, 2011Genoa City — This summer will be a season of change for area legion baseball.Unlike last year, there will be no merger between Genoa City and Lake Geneva. Last year’s senior legion squad, the Geneva/Genoa Red Legs, will now simply be the Genoa City 19U Senior Legion. Also, Post 24 will represent the Lake Geneva 16U Junior Legion squad. Coach Rick Schiltz said a merger just wasn’t in the works this year.

For years now, she has been dedicated to volleyball, driving down to Illinois for three-hour club practices, traveling across the country for weekend tournaments and playing for the Big Foot varsity squad. Well, the blood, sweat and tears have paid off for the 17-year-old standout. She recently verbally committed to play Division 1 college volleyball at the University of Texas-San Antonio, realizing a goal she has had since the age of 12.
Top duo wins match in MadisonJune 09, 2011Madison — Heading into last Thursday’s Division 1 state tennis meet, Badger boys coach Marty Badt had a simple goal for his boys — win a match at state. The No. 1 doubles team of Matt Heinz and Reid Solheim heard their coach’s plea loud and clear, scoring the first win for Badger in several years. They downed Madison Memorial’s Josh Blumenfeld and Ahmed Abdelhameed, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6, before losing in the second round. Badt said the win was big for the Badger program.“It’s always nice to see all the coaches and have them remember Badger,” he said. “With a win and playing on multiple days, everyone learns where Badger is. Matt and Reid played really well. The other team was good, but we played a little better overall.”
