May 26, 2011As Memorial Day approaches, there's something missing — I can feel it. Something is just not right.
Maybe it's less something than someone.
During my years as editor of the Regional News, to me, more than anyone, Ray Mellien signified Memorial Day. It's probably my memories of him in his uniform marching or him being one of the special detail for the 21-gun salute so many times at ceremonies and events in the area. It also is because every year, about three weeks prior to Memorial Day, he would stop in at the newspaper office, give me a great smile and hand me the mock up of the American Legion Memorial Day program, often with his handwritten notes on the schedule for the day's ceremony. |

January 20, 2011Although I enjoy almost all sports, I don't typically use this column to talk about those things.
An editorial should be about important national topics such as our more than $14 trillion national debt, increasing health care costs and the use of politics by some to make excuses or try to explain why an insane man shot people at an Arizona grocery store.
An editorial typically should be an opinion about a local issue such as the rescue and fire services disagreement between Geneva Township and the Lake Geneva Fire Department or whether the Walworth County District Attorney's Office should have filed charges against Lake Geneva city staff for mismanagement. |

He lived in Kenosha and his main connection to the Lake Geneva area is that the corporation he headed owns our paper. But he is known throughout the Midwest as the paternal spirit of one of the few family-owned newspapers remaining.

Sometimes change is goodApril 28, 2011It seems like every year or two I write a column like this. I talk about where we’ve been as a newspaper and where we’re going. Over the years, the Regional News has done a pretty good job keeping up with the times. We have had a website for longer than many other newspapers of our size — since about 2001. About three years ago now, we performed a full redesign of our website. During the past year or so, we have tried to stay up on the social media and have even dabbled with video and posting the materials on YouTube.
