Another great lake at my doorstep

May 03, 2012
I grew up two blocks from Lake Michigan and thought everyone had a Great Lake in their front yard. Now I live about the same distance from Geneva Lake. So six decades later I have another great lake at my doorstep. There's something about such a large body of water that speaks to me in languages that only the soul understands.

Some of us have been waiting a lifetime for this

January 20, 2011
Although I enjoy almost all sports, I don't typically use this column to talk about those things. An editorial should be about important national topics such as our more than $14 trillion national debt, increasing health care costs and the use of politics by some to make excuses or try to explain why an insane man shot people at an Arizona grocery store. An editorial typically should be an opinion about a local issue such as the rescue and fire services disagreement between Geneva Township and the Lake Geneva Fire Department or whether the Walworth County District Attorney's Office should have filed charges against Lake Geneva city staff for mismanagement.

Why I decided to become editor
April 26, 2012
For years I told people I never wanted to go to another parade because Iíd covered so many. For 20 years after college, I covered parades or their equivalent ó city happenings, kids at school, politics, police and courts, even sports. I was a reporter at a daily, editor of a weekly and a daily and a columnist and associate editor of the Janesville Gazette. When I was promoted to general manager at a different newspaper 20 years ago, I pretty much left that life behind. I made a few more bucks and had time to attend my own childrenís events instead of covering the events of someone elseís children.

Election eves are tiring, but I never grow tired of them
April 12, 2012
Thereís nothing like a newsroom on election night. Regional News Reporter Chris Schultz bursting into the Regional News with results from the city. Reporter Rob Ireland calling in from Fontana with results to go up on the web. Reporter Steve Targo guessing wrong on just about every race he was covering. Two pizzas, steaming on a desk, waiting to be eaten. And the clock ticking.
Locals, businesses need common ground

Itís our own little civil war.Every tourist community fights it.Itís over aligning the interests of the locals with the tourist-oriented businesses.
Some lessons shouldnít be so hard to learn
March 29, 2012
Shoes or a book? When I was a kid, I picked up the habit of reading while I walked. The Hardy Boys when I was going to the store. Or a newspaper, the sports section usually, when I was walking home from my paper route. People always figured Iíd end up walking in front of a car. Hasnít happened yet.A few days ago, I had this book vs. shoes dilemma because Iíve been walking to work lately. I usually carry a pair of dress shoes I put on when I get to the office. But carrying a pair of shoes and reading a book at the same time are incompatible. Usually, the shoes make the cut. But this morning I was reading a book I couldnít put down.

High profile court case coverage will continue
March 08, 2012
Weíve recently taken some heat regarding our coverage of two high profile felony cases now going through the Walworth County court system.Thatís understandable. People can have their say and we will listen. However, there appears to be a misunderstanding as to what are the responsibilities and duties of a newspaper and communication company when it comes to covering these types of situations. I think this is a perfect time to attempt to clarify to our readers as to how and why we report the things we do.
Main Street traffic improvements must be done
March 01, 2012
Sometimes there are difficult choices local government officials must make. There are always two sides to an issue. Thereís taxpayer money involved and seemingly always the way of life and future of the municipality at stake. One upcoming decision the Lake Geneva City Council will make is whether to install state-of-the-art traffic signals on Main Street at the intersections of Center and Broad streets. While a good percentage of most decisions are tough, this one is a no-brainer. I donít believe there is a choice in this matter. Just like the need for the Edwards Boulevard extension to Sheridan Springs Road, this is a need in the community that canít fall by the wayside.
