Numbers can lie

April 11, 2013
I have a confession to make. I've been keeping a secret for nearly 10 years. I scored a 17 on my ACT. College-bound high school students will take the ACT this Saturday, April 13, or in June. Those students are hoping for higher than 17....subscribers>>

'Our Town' deserves attention

April 11, 2013
I have been remiss in not giving more publicity to a series of events celebrating the classic Thornton Wilder play, "Our Town." "Our Town" was first performed in 1938 — so this year is its 75th anniversary. I saw it performed in Milwaukee last year and think it remains surprisingly fresh and poignant. The play covers "love, marriage, death and eternity," according to a press release for a production at UW-Whitewater. That about covers the waterfront....subscribers>>

A glimpse at our Wednesday morning meetings
March 28, 2013
The first thing I do when I come to work Wednesday morning is grab a fresh copy of the Regional News.I’ve been in the business 40 years and it’s still a rush to see the paper when it’s hot off the press. But it’s also a moment mixed with a wee bit of trepidation. The mistakes that we made Tuesday night when we put the paper to bed are usually obvious in the light of day.
The survivors never really rest in peace
March 21, 2013
The fatal dog attack March 6 has stirred our emotions. We’re appalled that someone would allow a child near pit bulls. We’re angry that pit bulls are getting such a bad rap — again.
The WNA awards are a starting point
March 07, 2013
“Awards only matter if you win.” In the past, I’ve told people that as a hedge against disappointment. Well, this year we won.
Promises unkept, fates sealed too early
February 21, 2013
“Michael is dead.” It was my cousin calling, Michael’s sister. I hadn’t spoken to her in awhile. She didn’t know my number anymore, so she tracked me down at work. I felt guilty. Their Christmas card had noted they’d be in Delavan in a few weeks. “Call and we can get together,” it said. I never called. We never got together.
Different views on pope's resignation
February 14, 2013
The resignation of Pope Benedict XVI was the biggest news of the week.Local priests Jim Schuerman and Angel Anaya of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Lake Geneva, felt there was wisdom and humility in his resignation, the first by a sitting Pope in 600 years.“I was surprised by the timing,” Schuerman said, noting its proximity to Lent. “(But) I do remember an interview or talk where he had mentioned when a pope is either physically or mentally declining that he would have the right to reign or the responsibility to resign.”

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
Lions shouldn't be favored...
January 24, 2013
Right now it’s a solution without a problem, but that doesn’t mean it should be swept under the carpet.I’m talking about the debate over whether or not to allow the Genoa City Lions Club to continue renting prime parking stalls in Lake Geneva for a charity raffle. For the last 20 years, the group has parked a trailer and the raffle prize, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, at the corner of Main and Broad streets during weekends and other high-traffic periods.
