Committee raises enough for fireworksJune 30, 2011Bloomfield — Let there be fireworks in the town this Fourth of July.
A few months ago, it was in question whether the town would have enough money for the display this year. But the town's Parks, Lakes and Recreation Committee raised enough funds for this crowd-pleasing part of the town's traditional holiday celebration.

Officials pose questions to voters about sirens, mosquito sprayingJanuary 20, 2011Genoa City — This spring, voters will have more to decide than who occupies what office.
Two referendum questions will appear on the April 5 ballot. The answers to those questions may determine whether the village of Genoa City continues mosquito spraying and using its emergency sirens.
The referenda came up Thursday, Jan. 13, during the regular Village Board meeting. Village Clerk Mary Buchert read the questions as they will appear on the ballot. |
Recent Bloomfield, Genoa City, Pell Lake Firefighters battle blaze in German CampJune 23, 2011With a cool, light rain sporadically falling, firefighters from several area departments fought a house fire on Fred Mohn Drive in Genoa City.On Wednesday morning, fire departments from throughout Walworth County and Northern Illinois hauled water in tanker trucks as they attempted to extinguish the flames.Law enforcement became aware of the fire when a neighbor reported seeing smoke. Police arrived on scene, saw the house was on fire and called in the fire department.

Laura and Jeff Brumm have 10 children, and during an interview last week, Lent said these parents could write a book on raising kids.“Every one of those children are as good as the next,” Lent said. “You can really see the love in the family.”
Suspect faces felony after blazeBloomfield teen allegedly set barn on fireJune 16, 2011Elkhorn — A Bloomfield teen is facing a felony arson charge after a May 11 incident where he allegedly attempted to burn down a dilapidated barn, which is family was renting. In a separate incident, Jay W. Hawk, 18, N683 Darling Road, faces a felony charge after he and another teen on Jan. 10 allegedly threw a brick off a highway overpass, which crashed through a semi-trailer. In the arson case, Hawk also was charged with felony bail jumping. In that case he is scheduled for a July 8 preliminary hearing.

School’s staff, students have college on brainJune 09, 2011Bloomfield — Star Center third-grade teacher Rebecca Hyde said recently that some of her students were discussing what they want to be when they grow up and what college they want to attend.Thanks to their teachers and school staff, Star Center students have college on the brain. At the start of the year, each classroom adopted a college to study. They backed their universities this fall during a college-style pep rally. They even got into the sports rivalries and dug into the histories and facts of their universities throughout the year, all of which culminated with the recent Camp College lock-in.But for Hyde and her students, she said an important lesson came out of this discussion between her students. She said they asked her why she didn’t go to Stanford for her teaching degree. She told them the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was a good teaching school.

It was on a property with no primary structure. The house which stood on the property had been razed. The couple was in the process of rebuilding it.As a zoning administrator, part of Murphy’s job is to investigate these type of complaints, which is just what she set out to do when she encountered another problem.
Robberies prompt officials to shut down bankMay 12, 2011Bloomfield — After three robberies in less than a year, officials from Talmer Bank and Trust have had enough.After July 29, the Pell Lake branch of Talmer, formerly First Banking Center, N1264 Park Road, will shut down. Hugh McLean, the president of Talmer’s Wisconsin region banks, confirmed this during a telephone interview Thursday, May 5.“The unfortunate part of this is we’ve had a number of robberies,” McLean said. “We’re concerned for the safety of the employees. Some of our customers have even (asked) why we’re keeping it open.”
Nuisance properties in BloomfieldMay 05, 2011Bloomfield — Ten properties were on the Town Board’s agenda for its regular meeting in April. Since then, one house was razed because it was deemed uninhabitable. Another raze order was expected to be served last week.The owners of five of them are, according to Town Attorney Brian Schuk, repeat offenders.“Some of these are zoning violations,” Schuk said during an April 28 telephone interview. “Some of these people are storing what the town considers junk (and) some are zoned residential and the owners are using them as scrap yards.”
