Town chairman hopes city continues to provide fire servicesJanuary 13, 2011Geneva — For years, the city of Lake Geneva has provided fire and rescue coverage to a region of the town including southern Lake Como subdivision and areas north of Highway 50.
Now, it appears if the city is going to continue any kind of town coverage, it will be firefighting services only.
Members of the Geneva Town Board and the Lake Geneva Police and Fire Commission met in closed session Thursday, Jan. 6, to continue talks about a new agreement, one excluding city rescue services. |
Recent Geneva, Linn Township Town couple pleads guiltyJanuary 06, 2011Elkhorn — A police raid last January of a Linn Township home yielded more than 150 marijuana plants, 150 grams of the drug and materials used for growing dope. Freddie G., 44, and Amy B. Rickel, 40, N1510 Geneva Ave., each pleaded guilty Dec. 17 to felony charges of manufacturing marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in Walworth County Court. The Rickels also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. The Rickels are scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 1 by Judge John Race. The felony charges carry a maximum penalty of 16 years imprisonment $35,000 in fines. The misdemeanor charges carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

It’s tough behind the badgeIt wasn’t a good year for some police officers in the towns of Geneva and Linn, especially former Geneva Police Chief Ed Gritzner. Although he received a warm sendoff when his retirement was announced Sept. 16 at a special Geneva Town Board meeting, it was a tough year for the longtime chief. In March, he was suspended for a day by the Geneva Town Police Commission. Then, in August, some people alleged Gritzner had an altercation with another Town Board supervisor during the FunFestival. To date, no town officials have confirmed it. In an e-mail Friday, Geneva Town Chairman Dan Lauderdale said he offers “no additional comment on the FunFestival incident.”

GLEA approves well water testing planDecember 16, 2010Linn — Next summer, town residents may have an opportunity to test their tap water for chemical and biological contaminants.The Geneva Lake Environmental Agency and the Linn Town Sanitary District are working on a cooperative program to provide private well owners the opportunity to have their well water tested for fecal coliform bacteria and nitrates at a state certified lab, said Ted Peters, director of the GLEA. Peters also is president of the Linn Sanitary District board.Everyone in the town drinks from private wells, Peters said. Included in the program would be informational fliers sent out to residents explaining the importance of groundwater protection.

He said building four bat houses — each of which have a 250-bat capacity — will help to ensure the bat population.
BREAKING - Charges filed against Elkhorn man in death of local boyDecember 02, 2010The Walworth County District Attorney's Office filed charges Friday afternoon against Jeremy C. Dees for the Nov. 16 crash that killed 9-year-old Eastview Elementary School student Carter Dorwin and injured his mother and brother.Dees, 33, appeared in Walworth County Circuit Court Friday afternoon via closed circuit television. He was in an orange jail jumpsuit. He still has a brace on his neck and was hunched over for much of his 5-minute appearance. According to the complaint, Dees is being charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle and two counts of reckless driving causing injury.

Recently, members of a special Reek citizens committee, School Board members and district staff and officials voted on which issues are the most important.Those issues prompted builders, architects and financial experts to talk about the possibility of a referendum Thursday, Nov. 18, at a special committee meeting. At a meeting scheduled for Monday, Dec. 6, the committee is expected to narrow the focus on what the proposed Reek School project will cover.

After two tornadoes roared through Southeastern Wisconsin, about 4,000 were without power. But on Tuesday, some locals continue to pick up the pieces.At about 11:20 a.m., Linn Police Chief Dennis Wisniewski said Zenda remained in a blackout. Wisniewski said the Linn Town Hall offices — including his Police Department — are running off a generator until Alliant Energy restores electricity, which was expected to occur by 2 p.m.
Police looking for witnesses to fatal accidentNovember 25, 2010Elkhorn— The Walworth County Sheriff’s Department is looking for witnesses to an accident that left a 9-year-old Lake Como boy dead.On Tuesday, Nov. 16, at about 6:58 a.m., a two-car accident occurred on Highway H by Park Street, which is near the Como Flats area, according to a Sheriff’s Department press release. “We are asking for your help. If you saw any part of this crash, or called into the dispatch center, we urge you to call Captain Scott McClory at (262) 741-4441and provide us with your name and phone number so we may speak with you,” according to the release. “It is very important to this case. You can call 24-7 as this number always has the voicemail featured activated.”
Geneva Town Board proposes trimmed-down budgetChairman shows worry over not raising tax rate yet another yearNovember 25, 2010Geneva — If the proposed 2011 budget is approved as-is, it will be the fourth consecutive year the town’s tax rate will be $1.91 per $1,000 of assessed value.That means the owner of a $200,000 home will pay $382 in taxes for town services. Additional portions of a town taxpayer’s bill go toward the state, Walworth County, Gateway Technical College and local school districts.But in an e-mail statement Thursday, Nov. 18, Town Chairman Dan Lauderdale discussed the pros and cons of keeping the tax rate the same four years in a row.
