December 02, 2010Elkhorn — The Walworth County Sheriff's Department is looking for witnesses to an accident that left a 9-year-old Lake Como boy dead.
On Tuesday, Nov. 16, at about 6:58 a.m., a two-car accident occurred on Highway H by Park Street, which is near the Como Flats area, according to a Sheriff's Department press release.
"We are asking for your help. If you saw any part of this crash, or called into the dispatch center, we urge you to call Captain Scott McClory at (262) 741-4441and provide us with your name and phone number so we may speak with you," according to the release. "It is very important to this case. You can call 24-7 as this number always has the voicemail featured activated." Y |
County charges $50 to install
interlocksDecember 02, 2010Elkhorn — A proposal that the county fund at least part of a drunken driving treatment program through a surcharge on the installation of auto ignition interlocks will go to the Walworth County Board's Finance Committee this month.
Walworth County Judge David Reddy suggested it to the County Board's Executive Committee at its November meeting.

County budget levy, rate increaseNovember 18, 2010Elkhorn — After expanding its 2011 budget and levy of $60.8 million by a scant $2,800, the Walworth County Board approved its spending plan by a 9-2 vote on Nov. 8.Only supervisors Dan Kilkenny and Randy Hawkins voted against the budget and levy. Based on where a taxpayer lives and how much of the four-part county tax levy he or she has to support, a property owner could find his or her property taxes for county purposes increased by 6.06 percent.’

Delavan police, DA to determine charges in standoffNovember 04, 2010Delavan — Of three Delavan men arrested early Sunday, two are still in Walworth County Jail, and one was released on a signature bond, according to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department.Guadalupe Valadez and Jesse Soto are still being held in jail on probation holds. Jeremy Soto was released on $1,000 signature bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 15, according to a Walworth County corrections officer.Guadalupe Valadez, 30; Jesus Valadez, 30; and Jeremy Soto, 25 were arrested between 7 and 9 a.m. Sunday. Jesse Soto, 29, Delavan, was detained but not arrested, Delavan Police Chief Timothy O’Neill said.

Sheriff faces challenge from two independent candidatesOctober 28, 2010Elkhorn — Walworth County Sheriff David Graves, 57, of Elkhorn, will face two independent challengers on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.Challenging Graves, a Republican, are Csaba G. Keller, 49, of Walworth, and Paul A. Yakowenko, 53, of the Genoa City/Pell Lake area. Graves was first elected in 2000. Before that he was undersheriff, patrol commander and assistant jail administrator. He has been with the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department since 1976.

Man who cut reverend’s throat heads to prisonNelson will spend 15 years behind bars, 15 year on extended supervisionOctober 14, 2010Elkhorn — In what prosecutors painted as a domestic abuse crime, a 23-year-old man who cut a reverend’s throat while out on bond for another violent crime will spend the next 15 years in a state prison.Martin J. Nelson, who lived in rural Whitewater, also was sentenced to 15 years of extended supervision. Nelson previously pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted homicide after he cut the Rev. Michael L. Obinger’s throat Aug. 20 in La Grange Township. During Tuesday afternoon’s proceedings, Nelson apologized to Obinger for the attack and the “embarrassment these proceedings have put him through.”

Lake Lawn still has time to recoverEmployees given notice, closing date in sightOctober 14, 2010Delavan — If the owners of Lake Lawn Resort can’t find new investors or a fresh infusion of funds in the next six weeks, it’s likely the 132-year-old hotel and spa will close by Nov. 30, or soon thereafter.Such a closing would send shockwaves through the local economy.According to the state Department of Workforce Development website, a 60-day layoff notice was sent to the 126 full-time resort employees at the resort on Oct. 8. Under Wisconsin’s WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act, the hotel has to register when and how many employees will be laid off.
