Pepsi effort fizzles, Treyton field supporters soldier on

Whitewater — The dream of getting a $250,000 grant for the Treyton Kilar memorial ballpark through the Pepsi Cola Co.'s "Pepsirefreshproject" is over, but efforts to build Treyton's field of dreams continue, said Rob Gosh, a friend of the Kilar family and spokesman for the fundraising effort. For the month of January, the project was in the running for one of two projects that qualify for $250,000 grants. Pepsi Cola Co. has set up a website where nonprofit organizations can appeal for votes to win grants of $250,000, $50,000, $25,000 and $5,000.

Delavan — The advisory council of a new Delavan-Darien Boys & Girls Club met and organized last week Ashley Contreras, the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Delavan-Darien School District, said the council will partner with the Janesville Boys & Girls Club and the new advisory council will answer to the Janesville board of directors. The next step will be to find a facility where the Delavan-Darien Boys and Girls Club can meet, possibly a vacant building or space in a school.

Elkhorn — Walworth County is seeking some short-term staff help for its Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.Although the job may last only six months, whoever is hired would help the CJCC and Walworth County Board set jail incarceration policy for years to come.The Walworth County Board’s Executive Committee recommended hiring the temporary staff at its Jan. 17 meeting.

Elkhorn — Walworth County Judge John Race said he was disturbed by the stream of homeowners facing foreclosure who came through his courtroom.“These are good people fallen on hard times,” Race said.“It isn’t often I am disturbed by what I do in court,” Race said in a recent face-to-face interview. But he said he was watching people coming into his court in tears, frustrated in their efforts to renegotiate their mortgages, and frightened by the summons and complaint for foreclosure filed against their homes.

While temperatures were not the coldest of the year, it was snowing and the wind was raw.

Elkhorn — Four people in Walworth County and one in California have been charged for allegedly planning to have marijuana shipped from California to sell to students at Elkhorn Area High School and elsewhere in Walworth County.Ian G. Johnson, 18, 3393 South Road, Lyons Township; Taylor M. Aguilar, 18, 1126 Dodge St., Lake Geneva; Curt A. Schlagel, 18, Sugar Creek Township; and Nikolas A. Koch, 18, 24-1/2 S. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn, have all been charged with conspiracy to deliver marijuana. If convicted, they each face up to six years imprisonment and $10,000 in fines.Merrick J. Boyer, 18, 1245 Morning View Dr. No. 162, Escondido, Calif., faces a felony charge of delivering marijuana. If convicted, he also faces up to six years imprisonment.

Las Vegas — Ed Sokolowski, a member of the Walworth County Fair Board, was one of five recipients of the Heritage Award.The award was made Dec. 1 during special ceremonies at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) 120th Annual Convention. Members of the Walworth County Fair Board nominated him for the honor. The Heritage Award is sponsored by Haas & Wilkerson Insurance.
Dunn sentenced to 10 years probation for child porn

Elkhorn — Writer, museum curator, teacher, and now, registered sex offender.Walter S. Dunn, 82, LaFayette Township, was sentenced to six months of confinement under the Huber law, followed by 10 years of probation after pleading guilty earlier to one count of possession of child pornography.Walworth County Judge James Carlson also imposed and stayed a three-year prison term, which could be enforced if Dunn violates his probation.
Police looking for witnesses to fatal accident

Elkhorn — The Walworth County Sheriff’s Department is looking for witnesses to an accident that left a 9-year-old Lake Como boy dead.On Tuesday, Nov. 16, at about 6:58 a.m., a two-car accident occurred on Highway H by Park Street, which is near the Como Flats area, according to a Sheriff’s Department press release. “We are asking for your help. If you saw any part of this crash, or called into the dispatch center, we urge you to call Captain Scott McClory at (262) 741-4441and provide us with your name and phone number so we may speak with you,” according to the release. “It is very important to this case. You can call 24-7 as this number always has the voicemail featured activated.”
Surcharge may fund jail diversion program

Elkhorn — A proposal that the county fund at least part of a drunken driving treatment program through a surcharge on the installation of auto ignition interlocks will go to the Walworth County Board’s Finance Committee this month.Walworth County Judge David Reddy suggested it to the County Board’s Executive Committee at its November meeting.The committee endorsed the recommendation.
