June 16, 2011Delavan Township— Lakeland Animal Shelter took another step toward expansion.
Last month, the Walworth County Board reviewed and approved the report of the County Zoning Agency for rezoning about 3.14 acres of land currently owned by the Hold Your Horses boarding ranch to make way for expansion of the Lakeland Animal Shelter.
The rezone covers only part of the 10 acres the shelter is planning to buy. Purchase of 10 acres from Hold Your Horses is pending, said Kristen Perry, director of Lakeland Animal Shelter.

Ashley Contreras, the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Delavan-Darien School District, said the council will partner with the Janesville Boys & Girls Club and the new advisory council will answer to the Janesville board of directors.
The next step will be to find a facility where the Delavan-Darien Boys and Girls Club can meet, possibly a vacant building or space in a school.

Lake Lawn Resort deal final, finallyMay 26, 2011Lake Geneva businessman and philanthropist Jim Drescher wanted to have Lake Lawn Resort up and running by now. He wanted the golf course lush and green, the marina prepped, the hotel open and ready for guests and at least some of the 300 employees who lost their jobs in winter, back to work.But the $9.5 million deal to purchase the property took much longer than expected, and now Drescher and his ownership group are hurrying to ensure at least parts of the facility are open for Memorial Day weekend. Late last week, Drescher finalized the deal with the banks and now his investment group owns the property. Drescher had hoped the deal would have been completed in April to provide time for preparations to open the popular and historical Delavan resort.

Drunken driver who killed boy gets 20 yearsMay 12, 2011Elkhorn — On Sept. 2, 2010, Mike Kilar lost his shadow, mini-me and baseball and fishing partner to a drunken driver.The father, who suffered from a broken vertebrae in a crash that killed his 6-year-old son, Treyton, said he was physically and mentally broken.“My son was killed by a senseless act of destruction, and one that could have been avoided,” Mike Kilar told Walworth County Judge David Reddy during a May 9 sentencing hearing.
BREAKING: Drunken driver who killed 6-year-old gets 20 yearsMay 05, 2011Elkhorn — A drunken driver who killed a 6-year-old boy and injured five other people in two separate drunken driving crashes Sept. 2 was sentenced today to 20 years in prison.Scott D. Dragotta, of rural East Troy, also was sentenced to 10 years of extended supervision.On Highways ES and D, Dragotta crashed his vehicle into another car, but fled the scene at a high rate of speed. Minutes after fleeing the first accident, Dragotta again crashed his vehicle.
Soldier with county ties dies in combatMay 05, 2011Elkhorn — Sgt. Matthew Hermanson, 22, of Appleton and with family ties to Walworth County, died from small arms fire April 28 in Wardek Province, Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.Hermanson’s death was confirmed by the DOD on May 1. According to the DOD’s official release, Hermanson was killed in action when enemy forces attacked his unit. The Wardek Province, where Hermanson died, is in the east central part of Afghanistan.Hermanson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Polk, La.
State Highway 50 plans proceed on scheduleActual construction may not occur until 2018 or laterApril 28, 2011Delavan — Dozens of property owners who live or work along Highway 50 turned out at Delavan-Darien High School April 20 to look at and hear about the state Department of Transportation plans for major improvements and expansions to the roadway.The project area is from Interstate 43 east, through town of Delavan and Williams Bay, to Highway 67.The new Highway 50 arrangement, referred to as the recommended alternative by the DOT, calls for expanding the roadway to six lanes from I-43 to the entrance at Lowe’s, and four lanes the rest of the way east.
Darien woman faces felony charge in theft of FFA Alumni Fund moneyApril 21, 2011Elkhorn — A Darien woman made a preliminary appearance in Walworth County Circuit Court Wednesday morning on a charge of felony theft of more than $10,000.Joy C. Becker, 41, 129 Sharon St., Darien, is accused of taking about $32,000 from the Delavan-Darien High School FFA Alumni Association Fund between April 1, 2009 and Oct. 31 2009. She faces fines of not more than $25,000 or imprisonment of not more than 10 years, or both. According to the complaint: Becker was treasurer of the FFA Alumni Fund.
Lake Lawn Resort sale details moving slowlyApril 21, 2011Delavan — The purchase of Lake Lawn Resort by a local group of investors led by Jim Drescher still is not a done deal, yet.But, Drescher said Tuesday morning, parties are working hard to iron out all the details that go along with the $9.5 million cash purchase of the 241-acre resort.“You close on a house in a month and we will just be at four weeks now,” Drescher said of the process to buy the resort. “There’s a lot of stuff to do and everyone is working hard.”
